my system completely locks up while moving around the apps menu and i have to do a hard reboot. I think that's why nothing is mentioned in log files.
Where do I start looking for what caused this?

If this is a regular thing, like it's always happening when you do certain actions, I'd recommend checking the ISO file that you used to install Zorin OS and consider re-installing it. It's possible something has gone wrong during the installation.
