Been using various flavours of Linux over the past few years including Mint, and distros with KDE (Manjaro, MX Linux, Kubuntu) on the same machine. Now I'm trying Zorin because I really like the simplicity and styling.
However, I'm having an issue with the taskbar settings not being properly retained over boots. I have 2 monitors and I like my appearance settings on the first option (not sure if it has a name) but customised: only showing running apps on the 2nd monitor, no clock, system tray or left box. Around every 3 - 5 boots these options will be randomly changed, no consistency at all. Items added or removed from either task bars. Sometimes there will be a system tray on both taskbars, sometimes no start buttons on either, desktop button added etc. Once in a while the entire appearance will have changed to no taskbars at all and a bar at the top only. I've never had these problems with KDE or Cinnamon.
I'm having the same problem with "wandering" display configuration. Tonight, after two days of refusing to start at all, the machine started Zorin BUT-
I have three monitors. My usual config is to have the taskbar at the bottom of all three monitors set to autohide. Tonight the taskbar is on top of display 3 only, no menu, no task bar, no right click to get to the taskbar settings. If I right click the desktop and access settings that way, the taskbar is still set the way it should be but the desktop is ignoring the settings. I do not have files ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc and ~/.config/kdeglobals.
Edit: I just rebooted completely and no change. Taskbar in the wrong place, no start menu etc.
Can you click on super key to open start menu or app grid? Then you could check at Zorin Appearance whether the layout is set correctly there.
With the extension-manager (if the program is not installed yet, you can install it with 'sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-manager') you can check if the gnome extensions "Zorin menu" and "Zorin taskbar" are enabled at tab "installed".
Taskbar settings are correct in settings, the desktop is ignoring the settings. The system menu and taskbar are both set to visible (doesn't show up well in the screen cap). All are set to "visible" except "Show Applications Button".
Aha! That cleared things enough to reset it, thank you!
That leaves the questions of
Why does it do this? This is far from the first time the display configuration has changed itself randomly, this is just the first time I couldn't figure out how to get it back without help.
and more importantly-
How do I prevent this? Random display changes, random config changes, two days of not starting then suddenly deciding to start again without any changes, what next?
Do you have installed third-party gnome extensions? They can make conflicts, e.g. "Just perfection". Or do you have installed Citrix workspace? It also makes taskbar problems.
For future issues you could save a copy of your ~/.config folder (press ctrl +h to show the hidden files in your file manager) as backup. And when there are problems you could delete the current .config folder and replace it with your backup folder. I'm not sure if that method would solve the problems, but maybe it helps to go easier back to a working desktop.
