This is a question about Ram usage or more precisely; lack of ram usage

My system consists of a Ryzen 7 5700g cpu, on a MSI B550 motherboard with 32 Gb ram. Zorin 17.2 & Home Dir are on the same NVME drive in the primary slot & media storage is on a 3.5" sata Hhd.
Regardless of what I doing, whether I'm converting video files with handbrake, streaming a movie, surfing the net, or just writing a letter in Only Office.
My pc always uses less than 4 Gb of the available 32Gb of Ram. Yet the cpu will run anywhere between 20%-90% usage on all cores.
Is this abnormal? & if not, What are the possible cause of this?

Tnx in advance for any assistance or advice given.
Kind Regards

I would suggest running a memory test to see if there's anything wrong:

https://help.zorin.com/docs/hardware/freezing-issues/#run-a-memory-test

Here's the results of the memory test

pagesize is 4096
pagesizemask is 0xfffffffffffff000
want 32768MB (34359738368 bytes)
got 29991MB (31448547328 bytes), trying mlock ...Killed

The first screen shot is before the mem test the second is after & the pc is doing same task in both shots

The Pc doesn't freeze or any other issues, It's just not using all available ram

Does the CPU usage ramp up even when you are not doing anything? i.e. when you start you computer without launching any programs?

Do You have any Performance Issues? I mean freezing Programs, dying Programs, something like that. Or do your System run and simply use not much RAM?

In common depending of Your Usage, it can be that You don't need much RAM. Streaming, Surfing or writing a Letter should use much RAM. converting Video Files I don't know. Do You play Games? If yes, do they run smoothly?

Zenzen.
I can't monitor cpu usage during start up, (i don't know how to, would be a better statement). When the pc is doing nothing there is only 1%-2% cpu usage & zero ram usage. I suspect that is caused by the system monitor running.
I checked the Bios before start up, The Bios recognises the 32Gb DDR4 ram but not the correct speed. Ram is 4000 mhz & bios says it's 2600 mhz
Ponce-De-Leon,
Performance issues?
Programs aren't freezing as such, though I've had trouble starting Only Office a couple of times. It would only start by accessing the actual file I intended to edit & not the program. But once it's open, it works fine.
I'm not much of a gamer but give me a day or two & I'll get back to you on that.

I just think it's a little unusual that cpu usage would be fluctuating when the pc is doing a tasks. While ram usage is constant, non fluctuating & well below the available ram.

Kind Regards
Thanks for your assistance

You might need to update the BIOS. It could be a bug in it.

Did You activate in BIOS the XMP Profile?

This is expected; computers never idle completely.

It might help to share the system specs. Try launching a terminal window and run:

sudo apt install lshw

And then:

lshw > specs.txt

This will create a file called "specs.txt" with the output of the previous command. You can then use something like Pastebin to share it here.

G'Day Guys,
I'm Back. Sorry about dropping off the face of the earth, got called out for remote location work.
OK,
I've updated Bios to latest version.
I checked the XMP Profile & it's activated. It's set to 4000 mhz but motherboard recognises ram as 2666 mhz.
Zenzen,
I'm not sure if I've done this right, Try link for Pastebin below. If it requests password it's my username here, but lowercase k.

It's only the file path that you've copied, but not the contents. Is best to just open the file, copy its contents, and paste them in the website.

Not sure what I'm doing on this site.
But try this Pastebin.com - Locked Paste

Password= PaulOK

Now it works :+1: This definitely shows two memory sticks available. This is where @Ponce-De-Leon might have a better idea, but I would suggest disabling the XMP profiles for now to see if that makes any difference.

Okay, You have 4 RAM Banks. Did You check that the RAM Bars are in the correct Banks? Because there is an Order where the RAM Bars have to put in. this should stand in Your Manual for the Board.

Another Point: You could check on the Manufactorer's Website if Your specific RAM is on the Vendor's List. It should work even when it isn't on it, but it is a bit more Gambling when it isn't. and You should check how much RAM Speed Your Board and Your CPU are supporting.
