Total input freeze but music plays normally in the background

Do you use fractional scaling? If yes, turn it off for testing and increase the text size instead.
Also disable hardware acceleration in your browser.
In what package format are the apps installed? Check if the problems persists when you use .deb packages (please first remove the installed ones before).

Thanks again for the help !
Contrary to the previous one, this freeze is reproducible with almost 100% chance, which helps when testing stuff
Alt F2 does not have any effect, I did not get any prompt. Ctrl Alt F1 still worked, and I restarted the computer from there.
This time I only launched Firefox, Steam, the game, and my VPN.
And I just tried a few times, it looks like I can only reproduce this bug from the game screen.
When I do the same stuff from other screens, it does not freeze anything.

I have no idea if I use fractional scaling, so I guess probably not ?
I just disabled hardware acceleration on Firefox, gonna try to reproduce the bug again.
What apps should I reinstall in .deb packages ?

Your Browser and steam. Install steam via the steam-installer:

Which browser do you use? If you want to use firefox I'll give you more information.

Most of my apps come from the "software" app on Zorin.
Firefox is native, and Steam comes from a flatpak, as does Signal Messenger for example. But I'm unfamiliar with this, so I don't know if that has anything to do with .deb packages

Okay. I'd recommend to change both into .deb packages.

Follow the first method to install firefox. Remove the firefox package on your system first.

Alright thanks for the tip, I didn't know there was a specific installer for Steam on Zorin. I'm installing Steam the way you suggested, and I'll do the same for Firefox. Could you tell me what's different for these 2 methods ? That looks pretty much the same for me

Steam-installer installs the .deb packag of steam and not the flatpak.
Zorin package of Firefox installs firefox in Zorin 17.3 as snap package.
There is no possibility to get the .deb package of Firefox via the software store. The commands for installation are such complicated because you have to add the repo of Firefox and also prevent that updates install firefox as snap in future.
Snaps and flatpaks are sanboxed and not integrated into the system. This can lead to problems. Deb packages also need less ressources (RAM, storage) than the other packages.

If this happens when you have all those applications running, this may just be that your running out of memory. Steam games tend to consume a lot of RAM and eventually reach this point. The symptoms that you describe in your first post also point to that (slowly unresponsive system until it halts entirely).

Before you go uninstalling any packages, try this:

I thought as much, especially because one of my 8 Go RAM just died on its own a couple months ago, but at least one time the computer froze totally as I was watching the ram, and it was not high, like maybe used at 50%. And right now I tried to reproduce the "new" freeze and my computer was
Anyway I just bought 2 new 8 Go RAM, this will answer itself as soon as I receive it if that is indeed a memory problem.

Alright thanks for the explanation. Why does Zorin natively install a flatpak and not a deb if that is a better version of the app ?

Installing Steam via Software Store is confusing. That is right. It is not obviously which package is the better one.

After reinstalling Steam this way, I can't reproduce the freeze I reproduced a couple times this morning. Thanks ! Looks like I managed to solve one thing at least, thanks to you. I would have never found this on my own !
I'll go and also reinstall Firefox, if that helps ...

I'm sure that will help. The browser is such a central element.

Yeah, that's another red flag since that's a rare sight — there are no moving parts or anything of the sort.

After you've replace these memory sticks, try again and see if you can reproduce the issue. You want to do this anyway to always have a little extra room for memory usage spikes, so it's a good investment regardless.

I was surprised because I bought this computer 2 years ago, and although the computer itself was not new, I think the RAM sticks were ... And I'm using the same apps that I did for almost a decade on my previous laptop with 8 Go RAM
The only difference is I started using Zorin just before the RAM stick died .. That's weird.
I only have 2 RAM ports so when I install the newer ones I'll be back at the same 16 Go RAM config I had a couple months ago. Hopefully I won't lose another stick

Fractional scaling can be disabled in settings>display>fractional scaling if it is turned on.

I have to run this command often, as when my computer runs for a good while, I then begin to notice a frame stutter every 1-second. Its been a problem on Linux since forever, and never gets solved. Nobody knows what causes it, or how to fix it. I get a temporary reprieve by restarting the DM via that command, so yes, it works.

Hi !
I haven't experienced a major freeze for a while now, so I guess that's solved, although I'm not sure what exactly made it work. I'll flag this message as "solution" to close this post but if anyone reading this experiments the same issue, know that I don't really know what did the trick !
Just for the record, both my ram sticks were fine, it was the ram port that was broken. I'll probably buy a single 16 Go RAM eventually, but at the moment I think that problem is solved.
Thanks again for everyone that helped !
