I want to issue you an apology Steve, as I never meant for this to happen, and even after Aravisians explanation, I still have a hard time understanding how Synaptic could do this much damage.
In my experience, Synaptic Package Manager is very safe to use, and its usually quite reliable. And whenever I need files that can't be found at all in the Software Store, I use Synaptic to install them, including drivers and library files.
If I had any thought at all that this would happen, I would have never have suggested it. And after what I've recently gone through, I wouldn't wish it upon anybody else. So again I am really sorry, this was not supposed to happen.
