Update from 17 Core to 18 Core : No Video

Update from 17 Core to 18 Core : No Video until I login.

Yes, I am logging in using muscle memory blind.

Once the desktop comes up, I can get video.

I have an old HP Thinclient. It is a strange beast.
I am using vga out as the DP to HDMI port never really worked well with Zorin 17.

Linux startup text flies by then at the end, no video output.

Trying to switch terminals does not seem to work.
Correction: ctl+alt+f2 brings up a terminal.

What linux command line voodoo can I try to fix this?

You might try DP or HDMI now... and see if they work better.

Once logged in on desktop, in terminal run

sudo lshw -C video

and relay that output here - to show what GPU you are using and if it has drivers attached.

Thanks:

DP and HDMI are not really an option. My monitor is a TV and I suspect it's HDMI is a bit off. The HP Thin client HW is suspect. I have had usb issues with my x-arcade, etc... Also I have a cheap DP to HDMI adaptor. When ever I try DP to hdmi, I have a lot of grief.

Here are the results.

vpelss@HP-t630-Thin-Client:~$ sudo lshw -C video
[sudo] password for vpelss:

AMDGPU, on Wani...
Likely EDID relay... (VGA is much more strict with EDID)

Are you logging in on Wayland or Xorg (X11)?

After I logout to get to login screen,
It was on Zorin Desktop, which I assume is wayland.
When I switched to Xorg, and rebooted, the only change is a big mouse cursor, which is progress, because with Wayland on a reboot, the monitor reports no video.

Regarding "EDID relay", if it is, what is suggested?

The EDID Relay is the Extended Display Identification Data.
This is transmitted (relayed) between the OS and the Hardware (monitor.) It defines what the monitor can support such as resolution, refresh rate, etc.

When I said "VGA is much more strict with EDID", it means that it rejects relayed information that does not match all known values. This is because VGA, which is analog, not digital, is more prone to interference, noise and even voltage variance.

Usually, setting standards using xrandr, which requires you to stick to X11 since Wayland lacks the ability, works around that issue.
These are the
xrandr --newmode ...
xrandr --addmode ...
commands.

As stated before x11 still failed.

Good news however, the following fixed it.

I am flabbergasted, however, how many files and packages need to be downloaded and compiled for a driver. There are triple A games with less code out there.

Thanks for the help.

As I understand it, the AMDGPU is supposed to be included in the Linux kernel. This is surprising...

It may be. As I stated, once logged on to the gui, the video worked fine. It was prior to logging in that no video was going to the monitor except for the intitial start up text. Once on the logon screen, dead. Maybe a reinstall set something straight.
