Did you try plasma 6 ?
And I disagree with you both.
Knowing Gnome's inner workings makes it painfully clunky and unpolished to me. Seeing where its widgets collide and are hidden using a flat monochromatic theme seems very amateurish.
This is why diversity in Desktop Environments are the largest draw toward GnuLinux; and limiting users to only One desktop environment is so damaging.
True, because users have different preferences. But it's not realistic to expect two developers to maintain a distro with multiple DE's (unfortunately). Even Zorin Lite with XFCE is going away in 2029.
Not myself, but I did watch reviews on youtube.
Why?
Single sole developers do it with multiple D.E.'s (not just two) and some of them are doing it part time.
Really? I wasn't aware. It seems like a lot of work for 2 people to take on.
That's why I like PCLOS Debian, with KDE (Plasma), budgie, Cinnamon, MATE, xfce to choose from, MATE being styled on Gnome2. No Gnome DE in PCLOS Debian, plus no systemd and no pulse audio (all Pipewire for audio). And I actually like PCLOS Debian xfce!
Well, to drive a point: Zoringroup successfully maintained the Zorin Setup of Pro, Core, Lite and Education since its release of Zorin OS 1
Over a decade of success shows it is realistic.
And at one point they had a Business edition, a Gamers edition and a Multimedia edition.
They only created the ui/theme and a few apps probably, nothing special. So no they could do way better imo.
That's a lot of editions ![]()
That are 2 different Concept's. On a LTS/stable Distro stands Stability on the first Place. Everything else is subordinate to that. that is the Reason why it has a - more or less - fix Software Stack and gets only Bugfixes und Security Updates. that should minimize Software Issues, Compatibility Problems and Conflicts.
A Rolling Release Distro offers in the first Place up-to-date Software. But this can create Issues and Conflicts. It don't have to. But the Risk is here way much higher. Of Course, You can have a stable Experience with a Rolling Release Distro, too. And it depends what Software are You use and have installed what could cause Issues when an Update would come. Here are simply more Variables what makes it more risky.
You could add peppermint to this list. Both devuan and debian versions have 32 bit versions.
Just also want to say in general in this section, the original topic was about the updater and an option for a large disclaimer on possible issues in those updates. I know it's easy to go off tangent, and I know Gnome is related and thus would lead to going a bit off topic on other DEs and distros, but it might not hurt reeling it in a little bit.
LTS = aiming for server usage which is logical. I cannot consider Zorin LTS stable at all as posted the reasons why. Zorin is always behind stuff, if ubuntu 26.04 gets released then zorin drops in with "Zorin 18" and use the 24.04 stuff which is outdated by then. I really don't understand why they don't have Zorin already running on 24.04.
Zorin will never grow, the drop of xfce will do more damage then good for this forum. They should work harder to keep up a bit and listen more to the community.
Just my 2 cents.
You do know you can downgrade if a application or something fails ?
Exactly right. Thank you! Yes.
I agree! That's why I'm looking forward to new changes they will make ![]()
It's great you're enjoying KDE, I also like customization. When I switched to Ubuntu (my first distro) 3-4 years ago, I was blown away by the possibilities (as you would, coming from Windows). I distro-hopped for a while until I found Zorin, discovered differences between desktop environments, and realized I prefer using Gnome.
I like the colors in your setup, not a big fan of cars though ![]()
Here's mine:
That might be the Case but that doesn't change that You could get in Trouble. and when it is big Trouble and You are not able to downgrade the Possibility is useless.
Again: I don't say that you can't have a stable Experience with a Rolling Release Model. But the Risk is higher for such Problems. My Point of View: When a Distro works for You, use it - the same with a DE.
It isn't outdated. It might be older, but it is still supported - that is the Point on an LTS Distro: Long Term Support.
The stability LTS releases provide is also desirable in desktop computers, not just servers. I want (and need) to be able to use my computer without surprises. Not to mention, that most people that Zorin OS is targeted at wouldn't even know how to rollback.
Being behind in software versions is also not that much of an issue. For some people, sure, they make a good case of why Zorin OS is lagging behind in terms of updates because they do need feature X. Most of the time I've seen this complain, however, is just FOMO syndrome kicking in rather than actual need for a new feature or a bug fix. The rest of time, people don't even know (nor care) what version they are running. All they care is whether it works or not for their needs.
This is one of my biggest peeves...
Something that is not the Latest is not "outdated." It is outdated once maintenance stops.
