I need to buy a small video camera for my laptop (for setting up picture in picture). Will any cam work with Linux or does it have to be Linux friendly? I'm assuming there might be an issue with software compatibility.
Edit: A little more research reveals not all web cams will work with LInux.
Dude, thats the first webcam I ever seen from the Creative brand (known for their wicked awesome sound blaster cards) that comes with a built in lens privacy cover, thats neat!
If all you need is 1080P, @Storm has got you setup right with that webcam! However, if you require a high resolution 4K webcam, the Logitech 4K MX Brio will have you setup right, and is also compatible with Linux. Only issue is, price will set you back a bit.
Well, the cam arrived but I failed to set it up correctly. It's definitely Linux friendly though (said on the box). I'm now hoping it has picture in picture ability, although isn't that just the software side of things?
Most UVC-compatible webcams work fine on Linux - just plug and play. I would suggest a Logitech C920 or Brio; both work great for conferencing and picture-in-picture setups.
