I use VSCode a lot and ctrl+. is a familiar and common keyboard shortcut. What I've researched says that this is typically used to launch an emoji picker in Gnome, hence it doesn't do what I expect in VSCode. I'm set on an emoji picker that doesn't use this keyboard shortcut. Lastly, I can't find this kb shortcut in the settings in Zorin.
Can anyone recommend a way to deactivate this for the OS?
I've tried to help you, but didn't found a solution. In Zorin 18 I couldn't find a keyboard shortcut for ctrl+., but when I press the keys, a search opens to search files on the desktop, maybe catfish.
I also noticed that there are set up much more keyboard shortcuts than are shown in the keyboard settings (or they are shown as disabled but work with some key combinations). I didn't found out how to disable the popping up search when pressing ctrl+.
In Zorin 18 you have to set up a custom shortcut if you want to open the emoji picker with ctrl+.,it isn't set as default.
But you get no warning that the keyboard shortcut is already used and will be overwritten when you create it, so I don't know why there is something opened at all by pressing this combination.
I also took a look at dconf editor, but didn't found something there (too many settings to search for).
It's interesting because on my system (check screenshot, 18 based on gnome) Ctrl . doesn't do anything.
Check Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Custom Shortcuts to see if something uses ctrl .
If you want another emoji picker, you can download "Smile" flatpak from Software.

I came across this post via StackOverflow. I hadn't considered going there in the first place as the search engines usually lead me there based on the question.
I should point out that this dialog is from Zorin 17. When I checked my other box running 18, it defaults to `super+, so this post might only really apply to v 17.
For me, it helps avoiding using a mouse click and choose and is more like VSCode in Windows.
And I find it rather odd that while there is a keyboard short cut settings section, there also is this IBus Preferences, and as far as I can tell, it's only accessible via the command line, but then opens a GUI.
Frankly, I'm surprised that it didn't involve editing a file in the root or having to pass some long bash command.
