If you are running on Wayland you probably need to adapt something to get xscreensaver to work.
If you want to try the screensaver and are on Wayland, it is the best to switch to Xorg before. Logout and at login click on your username then a cog wheal appears at the bottom right corner. There you can switch between Xorg and Wayland.

In Wayland session, You can run screensavers, but have to run them manually - they are all independent programs and don't depend on the xscreensaver package, which does not work properly in Wayland (so there is no point in installing it). What you don't get in Wayland is the delay timer to start them after a period of inactivity and close them automatically on resumed activity.
Tip: Often overlooked is the rss.glx package, which I think contains some the best screensavers.
