Windows app devwing installs but doesn´t run

I’ve downloaded windows-app https://www.devcad.com/download/DevWingSetup3_07a.exe that unfortunately isn´t available in a linux-version.

I get the errormessages shown below, during the installation proces. I’ve sent the error log to the developer, and attached it here.

I´m running Zorin OS 18, all software updated prior to installing this windows app.
I installed through rightclick on .exe & select open with windows apps installer (but then the dutch version). Result is that the program is not installed.

How do I get it to install / run properly?

Installlationscreens:

After launching the app, the following messages are shown, in this order:

The error log:

When you get to the point of if you want to allow it to create launchers or not (Desktop or Quick Launch), you should uncheck everything. It will attempt and mostly fail as you will need to create a launcher seperately most likely in order for that to work. I would also recommend that when it finishes and it asks you if you'd like to automatically launch the software after install, I would uncheck that as well. Then, manually go to the location that the software should be installed in, and launch from there first to make sure everything's working.

Just having that auto-launch enabled after windows software has installed can create a lot of problems. I know the way I'm describing is a little more manual, but generally if the software claims it has installed successfully, then I lean towards it's trying to launch the wrong thing / a location that may not exist versus the software not actually being successfully installed.

I've uninstalled devwing and deleted all files from the folder they were installed in and re-installed with all items unchecked.

I still cannot start the devwing.exe, neither by double clicking nor by open with ...install windows application.

I found devwing3.desktop textfile - does that hold a clue to run the program?
It says:
Exec=env WINEPREFIX="/home/bluedot/.wine" wine-stable C:\\ProgramData\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start\ Menu\\Programs\\devWing\ 3\\devWing\ 3.lnk
Type=Application
StartupNotify=true
Path=/home/bluedot/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/devWing 3
Icon=B296_DevWing.0
StartupWMClass=devwing.exe

By this, do you mean the EXE you downloaded and used to install? If so, you need to go into the folder structure and find the exe for running the application. The one you downloaded won't work to make the currently installed version run.

Path=/home/bluedot/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/devWing 3

This would be presumably the location of the exe you need to find to run the program with. And if you are trying with that exe, are you getting the same errors, or different errors than last time?

I found the newly installed devwing.exe

That file I tried to run by double clicking and by run with.. install windows application.
Both times DevWing did not start up.

I can try to run the installer for this software later today when I get back to my computer, but for now that's all I have for you really. The other thing you could try to do is run the EXE in a terminal, that way you might get more information out of it. You could do it by doing:

cd /path/to/exe
wine DevWing.exe

That would at least hopefully give some more information as to why it may be failing. It might be worth switching to X if you're running Wayland, as that can run into issues as well. You can do that by going to the login screen, then when you're typing in your password, click the cog icon in the bottom right and select Zorin on X. Then login as normal and try again.

I typed

bluedot@bluedot-HP-ProBook-6570b:~$ cd /home/bluedot/Downloads/
bluedot@bluedot-HP-ProBook-6570b:~/Downloads$ wine DevWingSetup3_07a.exe

Resulting in:
MESA-INTEL: warning: Ivy Bridge Vulkan support is incomplete
and the cursor blinking on a new line but the prompt not showing.

On the login screen I don´t see a cog icon, so couldn´t try the Zorin on X-route.

Enable the login with password then you can switch at loginscreen to Xorg. With automatic login the cogwheel isn't shown. The icon is only shown on loginscreen not on lock screen, so you need to logout before.

I noticed I tried to run the setup.exe instead of the already installed devwing.exe..... I'm not quite wake appearantly

Tried again to run DevWing.exe, but got an errormessage:
bluedot@bluedot-HP-ProBook-6570b:~$ cd /home/bluedot/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/devWing 3
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `('

The ( does exist in the folder name and in the path of the folder that DevWing.exe lives in.

What is wrong?

You could try

cd /home/bluedot/Downloads/
wine DevWing.exe

DevWing doesn´t reside in Downloads, but in /home/bluedot/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/devWing 3

When I want to go there in the terminal with
/home/bluedot/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/devWing 3

than bash says:
syntax error near unexpected token `('

The ( does exist in the folder name and in the path of the folder that DevWing.exe lives in.

What is wrong?

You may need to put the destination you're going to in quotes ( " ") as what I'm thinking may be happening is your one folder has spaces in it (the Program Files one) which is probably causing some issues. So probably

cd "/home/bluedot/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/devWing 3"

That gave a different response, and I lost the prompt (I think):
bluedot@bluedot-HP-ProBook-6570b:~$ cd "/home/bluedot/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/devWing 3"
lead to the response below, and I think the prompt is now missing:
bluedot@bluedot-HP-ProBook-6570b:~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/devWing 3$

I then tried
bluedot@bluedot-HP-ProBook-6570b:~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/devWing 3$ wine DevWing.exe
which gave these messages:
MESA-INTEL: warning: Ivy Bridge Vulkan support is incomplete
MESA-INTEL: warning: Ivy Bridge Vulkan support is incomplete

Basically what this is saying is that you're running a little bit of an older system and the support for Vulkan isn't there (or at least, enough to get things going). You could try falling back to opengl to get the program running:

WINED3D=opengl wine DevWing.exe

What I typed & got back:

bluedot@bluedot-HP-ProBook-6570b:~$ cd "/home/bluedot/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/devWing 3"
bluedot@bluedot-HP-ProBook-6570b:~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/devWing 3$ WINED3D=opengl wine DevWing.exe
MESA-INTEL: warning: Ivy Bridge Vulkan support is incomplete
MESA-INTEL: warning: Ivy Bridge Vulkan support is incomplete
bluedot@bluedot-HP-ProBook-6570b:~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/devWing 3$

What components should I upgrade, for my system to run this and similar windows applications?

That would be your motherboard, since it is Integrated Intel Graphics.
So your next option, if you have a slot available, is to buy a Dedicated GPU, from AMD or Nvidia, that carries support. I am not sure on AMD but a websearch will get you going... But for Nvidia, you would want to focus on 3060 or newer, though Vulkan support does exist prior, it's a more stable card and has an established support.

I'll start shopping for a more potent laptop then.
Is nvidia 3060 or better a requirement that follows from the exotic software that I want to run, or from Zorin OS?

In the latter case I'll first try to get my other exotics to run, to find if they set additional requirements.

I would say honestly anything within the last 5 years is probably good to go, if you were wanting to look at some used stuff. Given that Ivy Bridge came out in 2012, it's safe to assume that you're gonna get a pretty big boost in that time range.

No, it was a general suggestion based on price vs performance. Compared to what you are running, it would seem like a beast.

Investigating further, it turns out that from Intel Generations 7 (Skylake) Ivy Bridge Vulkan is supported by the processor's onboard graphics capability. And as a result I can suffice with a laptop with such processor, rather than NVidia 3060 or better.

Is that a correct conclusion?
