I'm having trouble switching from Wayland to Xorg on my Zorin OS installation. I need to use Xorg because some of my essential apps don't work properly on Wayland, but I haven't been able to get past the login screen.
The Issue:
Whenever I select "Zorin Desktop on Xorg" at the login screen:
The screen goes black.
A white/black "X" cursor appears in the middle of the screen.
No error messages are displayed.
I have to switch to TTY ($Ctrl+Alt+F3$) and run sudo systemctl restart gdm just to get back to the login screen.
What I've tried so far:
I read that GNOME extensions might be causing the conflict. I tried ensuring "Zorin Menu" is enabled and "Zorin App Indicators" is disabled, but it didn't help.
I installed the "AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support" extension to see if it would replace the native one and fix the hang, but the error persists.
System Info:
Graphics: Integrated Graphics (Intel) - No Nvidia drivers involved.
I get same thing. The behavior began after initial install and still happens occasionally. I'm able to press Power Button on PC (initiating suspend), wait a few seconds, hit Spacebar (waking it up), this brings up desktop.
In my case, Power Button is within easy reach so it's fairly easy workaround but I'll be interested to see if your able to fix the issue.
After logging in on Wayland, you might check if anything in your ~/.config directory affects your display - and disable any extra gnome shell extentions.
I'm not sure how to find "anything in [my entire] ~/.config directory [that] affects [my] display."
I have been having a similar issue since upgrading to Zorin 18, but intermittently. Luckily my keyboard has a "calculator" button that pulls up the calculator program, and that seems to "wake up" the session.
Unfortunately, Wayland is completely unusable. I get no video signal the moment I log in.
monitors.xml is the usual file that is the culprit. Sorry, I was unclear because this one can be a variable that the end user knows more about than me at a remote distance. The end user is the one who normally makes configuration changes or settings changes.
If this is a default install and you have made none - then monitors.xml would be your starting point. The action is to Delete the monitors.xml file (Or move it elsewhere as a back up in case you want to restore it).
No dice, I'm afraid. (Deleted monitors.xml, then restarted.) This is weird, because it seemed like it was fixed for a while, and now suddenly today it's broken again.
I also restarted again, and it only stayed on the black screen for a moment. Then I restarted again, and I had to do the calculator trick again. At least that always works.
The best workaround for X11 folks currently (barring an actual fix) seems to me to be keybinding some small app like the calculator or the terminal. The keyboard and mouse inputs both appear to work in the black screen. @rtellushow pressing the power button may escape the black screen because it opens the shutdown confirmation dialogue, but if you keybind something else you're not on a timer to close it. I'd wager something similar would probably work for @_leoml to get them to their desktop. Hopefully.
I would like to use Wayland again (it worked for me in 17.3 - I wasn't clear enough in the original comment), but I have no idea where to even start with that. Separate issue, anyway.
