Zorin 17.1 Lite is out!

Welcome to the Forum!

I wouldn't call 5 more Years of Support 'a very limited Time'. I mean, I can understand the Users who say that it is a big Thing what Zorin will do. I mean, it IS a big Thing. And when someone says ''That is no longer my Distro'' it is okay.

In the scheme of operating systems, 5 years is a very limited amount of time. Perhaps my ire is mostly from myself having thought I had found the perfect Windows replacement... supporting a graphical interface that I found to be much more to my liking than any other graphical interface (I actually, for reasons of my own, almost detest Gnome). Now, I'm being told that I have about 5 years to use and still get support for that system, and then I can switch or be on my own. This is pretty much what Microsoft said about Windows 10... something else I had put quite a bit of effort to make it work and look like I wanted... I'm told that it will be supported for just a while longer, at which time I can continue to use it unsupported, or purchase more modern equipment that will support Windows 11 (something that will never happen), or find another operating system (which I thought I had). Sorry... I'm cranky... I'm upset about this. I thought I had found something that I could work with for many years to come and would continue to get upgrades, updates, and support. Now I find that I must change to something else... AGAIN!!!

@RaynorBear is quite right.

My biggest problem is that for how long have you directly observed me, personally, on this forum, excusing the ZorinGroup?
Explaining away their delays?
Explaining away their lack of communication? Speaking up for them, swiftly, when they choose not to speak to the End User?
Explaining away the vaporware like Zorin Grid?
Explaining away the complaints of things being "outdated" or the very long release cycle?

For me, it comes across as though I allowed my ego to interfere with my better judgement.
I was not willing to admit to myself that I was rationalizing and explaining it away.
The ZorinGroup did not explain themselves to me, which I then explained to you on the forum. No. I assumed the most positive and beneficial excuse on their behalf.

I am only human. And now I feel like a fool.
I wanted to believe in the Zorin Project. It just worked when I installed it. It was solid. Right? It was right?
Well... As you know, I am pretty quick with troubleshooting. This put it out of my head that I was biased. I troubleshooted and resolved any issues I had relying on my forum experience so neatly that it presented the illusion that I had a trouble-free experience. But when I put my brain onto a piece of paper, I began to remember having to fix the graphics on my own daily driver repeatedly. Having to tweak various configurations to get certain software to work. Things other people might have to ask on the forum... I did in five minutes and forgot all about it.

It is not enough to believe. We need a showing of support from the developers whom we are granting trust to. We need evidence as to their intentions and that evidence can no longer come from me assuming and excusing the silent developers.

I was too busy showing support and not holding them accountable. That is called enabling.
They need to show the End Users support.

I have contact with some developers another distributions and people are very community with a folk. Have open mind talking about what is changed in every day. What is changed, when it something must be patched then best update. Here I never to much hearing about brother Zorin. The people creating this place, mostly friendly - @Aravisian @swarfendor437 @Storm @StarTreker @zabadabadoo @citfta @community_moderators .
ZorinGroup I reading on they webside. They are a company. Mostly they put information when they product will be released. How I can acceptable that behaviour when another developers distribution have a more friendly contact with a people? Yes it burn many time. That is true. I don't judgement Zorin. Mostly in my opinion i writing this is good operating system for beginners.

I have long, for very long, been dismayed with this. I can talk to the MX Linux devs on a first name basis.
I have spoken directly with the XFCE devs and the Mint devs more times than I can count and in one instance, read Mark the complete riot act (for their decision to introduce CSD's in XFCE. That one was in the full glare of publicity, too).

It was maybe about a year ago that Kyrill said to me in a PM on this forum,. "Yes, I know we need to work on our communication." It was acknowledged.
And nothing ever changed. If anything, it feels like they got quieter. We are just a means to and end, rather than the End User that makes Zorin OS possible.

You don't have to apologize. I can understand that. I use Windows 10 and after the Announcement of Windows 11 and what it all makes/brings, I decided too that this is enough. So, I still have Windows 10 and will keep it until 10/2025. Then the Support ends (I know, that You can buy more Support for Win10, but ... Hell NO!). Mac was no Alternative. I don't like Apple. So, I remembered in to my Childhood that I had Linux (it was Ubuntu) to test it. But in my Childhood I didn't understand that Linux is ... Linux, hahaha! And the Search began.

And theoretically it had be fast over BUT unfortunately Canonical makes Ubuntu like they did/do. Ubuntu as a System I like. And I like the Gnome Experience on the System. But the Canonical Desicion's with Snap ... No. Snap as a Possibility to install a Program like on Zorin, okay. But to push it in the System, No.

I tried Systems from/with Debian, MX Linux, Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora etc. But that all wasn't the right Thing for me. And then I saw a Video on a german Youtube Channel from Zorin. And I thought ''Yes, that looks interesting!'' And I'm landing on it. I tested other Distros but I still came back.

When it would be that Zorin would say now ''We will close'' my Thoughts would be ... not so good too, hahaha! It is a hefty and critical Phase that will come now. And I'm sure that Zorin will lose Users because of this Desicion. I would think that Zorin knows that too, that they will lose Users.

So, I will see what they make in the Future. Maybe it will come a Point, where I say ''That is not longer my System'', too. But at this Point now, I stay here.

Frankly, I find it very obvious, when one can tell quite easily, when one has an absent T landlord, or site administration. And yes, both are a problem!

On the site side, when you have no communication with administration, you can't open up a dialog about site issues, or talk about where the progress of the project is currently. They are simply just absent!

On the living side, when you have landlords who don't want to be there, and they are just using you as their huge cash cow, so they can travel the world, things get worse and worse within the housing community.

Things always go from bad to worse here, and it certainly is not getting any better, since the owners son took over. He loves the money, but doesn't want to do any of the administration. And the managers they hired to manage it, hate their jobs, and think of us as 2nd class citizens.

While things are not that bad on Zorin's website, still, the lack of communication leaves much to be desired, and has been a constant issue forever. By them acknowledging the issue, and not doing anything about it, is them telling us to go pound sand.

And to be perfectly honest, when I told the property owner about our leaky roofs, instead of saying, "I'll get that fixed for you no problem." He said, "Well we all got problems." And not a thing has been done.

He literally does the least amount of work effort, to upkeep this community neighborhood, while raising our rent twice in one year. So yeah, I would prefer to not have absent T landlords, just as I would prefer to not have absent T administrators.

But it is what it is, and we can't change anything. Visa V, whatever will be will be. But don't ask me to like it lol.

Well discovered (not tried) PCLinuxOS xfce out. Having issues with my Ryzen powered rig being unable to handle PCLinuxOS KDE - but my good lady's undepowered rig booted into live mode without any issues, and could even scan a document! Athlon64 single processor, 2 Gb RAM, EVGA 256 Mb AGP 8x graphics ... from 2006!
Just no sound. But I was gobsmacked - even has Ventoy and Timeshift included, and Synaptic Package Manager on the Panel (and no Systemd or leftovers of elogind so if PCLinuxOS can do it why can't all the other distros do it?)!:

In comparison, MX-Linux KDE 23.1 needs a minimum of 2 Gb to run - that did not even show up in live mode!

Well, "we can't change anything" depends on a lot of factors, what has impressed me most recently was an Al Jazeera documentary about one man's fight against the corrupt government in Armenia:

Sadly not available on line but I have watched this twice on Air.

Background:

Here in the UK, if Landlords don't do repairs, the tenant can call on local government to issue a State of Disrepair order to get repairs done. The flip side of this is that Landlords can initiate eviction proceedings! When I was a Home Care Organiser many years ago, I was on Saturday duty with a walkie talkie type mobile phone. I had to contact the Emergency Duty Team about a woman and son, both elderly, the son with learning difficulties, had had both their gas and electric supplies condemned - the Landlord was waiting for them to die so he could sell the house. I requested the EDT issue a state of disrepair at earliest convenience. Never knew what happened as it was not my normal area of working in the City.

Maybe this is beta version? Maybe to fast is out?
How long the bugs will be fixed if exist?
No ideas. Then better still using 16.3 Lite
From a code perspective, wayland seems much smaller, more minimalist.

I don't know c/cpp specifically, but even a quick look at the repo showed that wayland (directly) is 10 times smaller than x11/xorg.
People think that Wayland is a mare and is large, and the x11 is minimalist
and it's the other way around.
However, wayland has a lot of additional dependencies, so the final result will probably be the same.
What that means LTS and Rolling?
LTS does not mean that errors are eliminated, their number is constant. They also exist bugs, never repaired and going forward.
Now people are rumours with Wayland will be support, new KDE 6.1 version where bugs need to repaired also Gnome.
Xorg many distrtibutions leave that for Wayland.

I did install the official release of 17 Lite in KVM and it runs well so far. The way things change with Linux I'm not going to concern myself with 6 years down the road. Wayland is coming, but it's going to be a while. I don't know if Zorin will have community driven flavors like many other distros, but I won't rule it out. If Ubuntu Unity can come back as an official flavor in 2024 anything is possible. :grinning:

Yes! Zorin - we never know what will be in next release in future.

Interesting this is sysinit and from Mandriva.
It is must be interesting distribution.

Mandriva is long dead. Originally it was a fork of Mandrake 9.2. What was Mandriva was continued by a different project, Mageia. 2007 was the first independent release of PCLOS. I particularly liked the Plymouth theme of 2007 which had a backdrop of a steel plate, and glowing blue orbs that appeared from left to right. The main issue I experienced with early versions, and I was using Netgear WG111.v3 dongle, was that if I changed from the default en-US locale to en-GB, I would lose wireless connection!

Well the only distro with full Compiz functionality, is PearlLinux. The downside is the developer is into Qanon.

I hadn't mentioned this distro, but thanks for the info.
