Zorin 17 & Evolution install/upgrade problem

In an effort to 'upgrade' Evolution through the software tool thinking that possibly install was the same as upgrade since I had it installed through this tool and wanted the newest version with the updates. Since doing this install I've found that either the install/upgrade has removed/deleted my mail file OR doesn't recognize where it's at, any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated in what to look for and how to proceed.

Thanks in advance,
KZ

Welcome to the Forum!

I don't understand right, what You have done. You get an Update for Your already installed Evolution? Or You have installed it new?

And do You use the APT Version of Evolution or the Flatpak?

Thanks and thanks for responding; I used the Flatpak twice from the Zorin software app manager. I installed Evolution I'm pretty sure from Flatpak originally when I installed Zorin knowing I'd use it. I started using Evolution and was wondering about the new version and kept looking for an update/upgrade but there wasn't one. Thinking that with an install it would 'upgrade' / overlay another updated copy on what was there I went with the install via Flatpak. I opened the new install and had no e-mails there which I'm thinking new install it either put in a new usable database and/or renamed the old one...I'm hoping for this. I did do a backup of which it hung and neither confirmed that it completed successfully or not.

Updates will show You in Gnome Software when there are available. Sometimes it can have a Delay depending from Circumstances.

I would suggest to uninstall all Evolution Versions what You have installed, then make a Reboot and then install one Version - APT or Flatpak.

I always use the APT version as updates for software also get updated with any system updates. Comments have been made that the Flatpak version is newer, newer isn't always an advantage. I view Flatpak the same way as Snap.

I'm still new to Linux in the sense that I'm now using it every day for personal use, as I used to use it for work years ago along with Unix.

WOW...interesting video and yup, I have to agree mostly with this guy in the video.

As I haven't made it clear, in regard to my debacle of installing the newest version of Evolution; would this be an additional installation in that the original still exists with my e-mail files intact? I know I've read and listened to where some of these apps/programs are or can be added more than once in its own container.

Hi,

If you believe you installed the flatpak version the first time, then the data files of Evolution is likely in ~/.var/app/org.gnome.Evolution/data/ or a place like that.

Also the configuration files for it are probably at ~/.var/app/org.gnome.Evolution/config/.

Please don't give up because based on your explanation of the problem, the data files are most probably somewhere in your home directory.

Also, many email providers keep the emails sent/received by users on their storage servers, chances are the email provider you used with Evolution is one of them too.

Thanks for the information, and you're probably right about flatpak along with finding what I believe is my mail in a file folders.db that's 143360 in size of which I'm doubting that's the original size when first installed.

I'm not giving up  but instead a bit frustrated. When it comes to Windows stuff I'm fine as I used to be a MCP not that it carries any weight now a days AND I'm trying to migrate away from windoze. I've followed Linux for some time and of course as I've said above worked with it along with Unix in a company I used to work for.

My mail provider would keep the sent/received e-mails on their servers but I was pulling away from keeping my files 'outside' versus on local storage, so I already deleted them.

Any help in getting this straightened out would be greatly appreciated. I could go the route of backups and playing with removing, deleting, reinstalling, etc. BUT I'm fine with getting my hands 'dirty' to get this resolved...finding I have possibly two installations or my newest install over wrote the old config file and all I need to do is point it in the correct direction...etc etc etc.

Thanks again,
KZ

Hi,

I'm not sure if copying those data and configuration files to a new fresh installation of Evolution would resolve the problem or not. I'm not familiar with the internal workings of Evolution or its Flatpak version.

Please visit this page: https://help.gnome.org/users/evolution/stable/data-storage.html.en

You can receive help from official people of Evolution including the people who are building it via the methods mentioned in that page, which are sending emails to the Evolution mailing list, or messaging the relevant people in their IRC chat channel.

If one was APT and the other Flatpak, the latter isolates itself from the system. I will look at my APT Evolution install and see where it is at. I have a VM of Zorin 17 on another OS. I will see where Flatpak installs to and get back to you.

Update 1: APT, storage is here - /home | .local | share | evolution:

Well, this was an interesting experience with the VM of Zorin 17. Been awhile so had to do a ton of updates/unattended upgrades. Then I launched Synaptic Package Manager and selected all packages related to evolution. This had a major effect of destroying (based on what I saw was going to be removed) the Zorin Desktop, Gnome Extensions, and Zorin Appearance and Zorin Connect.
So after completing the removal I opened Synaptic Package Manager and searched for all things 'zorin' in the search bar. Selecting the reinstallation of ZorinOS-desktop pulls back in the APT package (I am making an assumption it is APT) of Evolution! So I have not done that. Now to see what happens when I reboot the VM:

I reinstalled gnome-software, launched it but cannot find a flatpak version, only the APT version. Did you download the Flatpak version from elsewhere?

When I installed Zorin, I had chosen to get the professional version so I had everything MUCH less expensive than windoze; in that I installed a build that would give me an environment much like I used to work in with and 'Office' clone. I installed Evolution from the Zorin build and tried to do the 'upgrade' via the software tool they have assuming it is integrated into the Zorin build. With that being said I used the Flatpak version which was an upgrade but oddly imo did not present itself as an upgrade/update but as an install.

Because Flatpak and APT are 2 different Package Formats. There are separated. That is the Reason for my Comment above:

Yes, another reason I want to find all or any files that may have been created by my downloading my e-mails as once confirmed I had removed them from my provider's server. I have been away from Linux/Unix for a while and not sure where things may be located now a days for repositories in regard to personal item storage.

I do understand where you were coming from and that Flatpak and APT are two different package formats therefore quite likely two different locations or install on top of one another, BUT before I even use it again or uninstall I would prefer to save my e-mails/database so that it is not removed or corrupted.
