Zorin and nvidia drivers

I would suggest to set up the same Resolution for both Monitors and then try it, but okay. You could see how it behave with Ubuntu.

That would not be feasible. They are two completely different monitors, one is 34" and the other is 27" so it would just look odd.

But on Ubuntu its working fine, the stutters are gone. So atleast i know that it wasn't hardware related.

When it works now, that is what matters.

Okay, a quick lil update on this issue i was facing.

I spent most of today setting up ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Installing discord, steam, setting up fstab and vivaldi browser. After that, i installed factorio and tested that out, worked fine.

After some time i decided to install ProtonUp-Qt, for those that don't know - this little piece of software is used to add custom proton versions to Steam.

I of course had to install flatpak, so i proceeded to do so with:
sudo apt install flatpak and sudo apt install gnome-software-plugin-flatpak, and then reboot.

While ubuntu was booting up, i was met with a black screen. Now this is getting interesting. All this time i thought the issue was Zorin, but now i have a few theories that i am going to go through with tomorrow:

  • Outdated bios. Especially since i saw this in the latest bios firmware patch notes:
"1. Updated with Intel microcode 0x12B to address elevated voltage requests during idle or light activity, further mitigating Vmin Shift instability issues.

2. The option to disable C1E in the BIOS has been removed to ensure it remains enabled, reducing processor stress and maintaining stability per Intel's recommendation.
  • Try different kernel versions as this seemed to significantly improve performance when i went from 6.8 to 6.11.

Other than those two points, i don't really know what else there is to try. The way i see it, the only driver necessary for linux is the grapics driver - so i suppose i could even try downgrading even further to nvidia-driver-545.

Did You added the Flathub-Repo? Only install flatpak and the Plugin isn't enough. Look here under Point 3 ''Add the Flathub Repository'':

ops, forgot about the repo - yes i also added the flathub repo with:
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

I followed the guie you provided, i think this has to just be a coincidence. I refuse to believe flatpak caused this.

Could be. But there would be the Point that it is a Qt-Version. Maybe that could cause this, too. Or it needs some Permissions to Areas; then You would have to use Flatseal to give it.

i didn't get to install protonup-qt yet.

I updated the bios this morning and was not able to resolve the issue yet. At this point i am only being met with a black screen, is there a way for me to get access to the terminal, or enter safe mode or something?

If I remember right, You should be able to open a Commandline with alt+ctrl+F1 or alt+ctrl+F2.

thats what i thought too, but those doesn't work on ubuntu atleast (maybe this is a sign that i wasnt able to successfully boot to the os?). Maybe ill switch back to Zorin and document in detail what i do to see whats causing this.

Before i updated the bios this morning, i was 27 updates behind - where there have been a bunch of cpu and chipset related updates.

Which command did you use for this output? Seems very useful.

yeah it is, the package is called fastfetch, a newcomer of neofetch which is no longer maintained.

Oh I know about it, I don't remember it looking like that for me though

Thanks!

Ah yes. I made a custom config for it. You can customize anything imaginable in fastfetch. Its pretty cool.

Oh my goodness. Its been a stressful few days troubleshooting this.

Thank you for your assistance @Aravisian.

Your post about purging and installing a new nvidia driver was useful throughout all this.

Since i ran into this issue in ubuntu as well, i switched back to Zorin 17.3 Core to continue troubleshooting this.
This morning i flashed the bios which i was so sure would solve all my problems (it did not :sob:).

When i switched back, i decided to write down everything i installed or ran with the terminal so that i could backtrace my steps at a later time.

Backtrace Log

Fresh zorin installation dated 01 apr. 2025:

Installed Zorin 17.3 Core.

  • skipped zorin tour.
  • Installed vivaldi from their website using the .deb package. Installed using zorin's gui.
  • Update packages via software gui.
  • Install graphics driver:

sudo apt install nvidia-driver-570 nvidia-dkms-570.
then command reboot.

Upon logging in, there is a black screen.

I ran the purge and install command for a new driver and chose to install nvidia-driver-550 instead. After the next reboot, after i get past the login screen - there is no longer a black screen! Problem appears to be solved.
