Is Evolution necessary to use the Calendar feature in Zorin 16.
It looks like both Zorin calendar and Evolution are both needed by the calendar feature in the OS.
It looks like Gnome Calendar is used to render the calendar events where as Evolution is used to managed events, is this correct?
If I remove Evolution from my system will it break the calendar Feature?
I am actually using mailspring for mail, I was going to remove Evolution but when adding events I noticed Zorin was using Evolution to manage them so I am guessing it's required?
An alternative would be to use Thunderbird (mail client) with Lightning (calendar) extension. Thunderbird is not installed as default mail app in Zorin, but can be found in Software Store. Just make sure you choose apt not Snap version.
@zabadabadoo Are you confirming that Evolution is indeed needed to sync Outlook calendar events in Gnome Calendar?
It certain seems that way. As soon as you uninstall Evolution, the events stop appearing in Gnome Calendar. Seems like it depends on the evolution-ews plugin for syncing calendar. Or if you remove that plugin, the events stop being synced.
This is a shame - I'm really not a fan of Evolution, and it kinda sucks that the Gnome Calendar in Zorin seems so dependant on it. I'm hoping I've missed something, or that this changes in the future.
I don't know the answer to that. All I can say is I don't use Evolution for Email/Calendar, I use Thunderbird+Lightning only. To sync outlook calendar I use the following 2 Thunderbird extensons:
