What's really interesting. I can almost make it happen by opening a dialog. So it looks like it's something going on with the NVIDIA audio driver or audio levels.
It's like side-chaining an audio compressor but with visuals. Really weird.
It's like turning the volume right down and then back to where it was set really quickly producing a gap. I've honestly never had anything like this on any machine before. So odd.
These are the ALSA packages I have installed - ignore the 'awesfx' and 'liblo10k1-O' as these are packages I needed for my Soundblaster Audio card to be present:
Use the drop-down arrow for the Audacious Settings and look for HDMI entries - there is usually more than one - I have blacklisted HDMI as it interferes with my Audigy card:
So I've fixed some of them. I'm going to persevere and look into my other issues.
I found some other people reporting the exact audio issues I'm having back in 2021 on a version of Ubuntu.
In their case, it turned out changing the PCIe version in BIOS fixed their issue. Switching from Gen 3 to Gen 2 in the BIOS, but I really don't want to do that. It'll screw over my 3090.
I'm basically in the process of working out if I can switch permanently to Linux. Both personally and professionally (I'm a software engineer).
I've been using Pop on this machine for the last 2 years and it's been great. But COSMIC is still really (in IMHO) not ready for prime time. It's going to be awesome, but I think it was released a little too early from beta. Hence, looking around.
I'm really appreciating Zorin, but also a little concerned due to the issues I've faced already. If I can get to the bottom of them I'm going all in and buying Pro to support the cause.
Another issue I'm seeing is with the CUBE animation, I do see graphic artifacts. I'm actually wondering if the root of a lot of these issues are in fact hardware.
I had to switch to using PCIe Gen 3 due to the PCIe riser I have only being Gen 3 compatible. I'm willing to put money on the fact that if the 3090 was plugged directly into the PCIe port, none of these issues would be happening ...
But the cost of PCIe Gen 4 risers that actually guarantee full speed and compatibility are eye-wateringly expensive.
If you need a distribution with a higher kernel then take a look at PCLOS Debian, no systemd, no pulse audio but pipewire out of the box. They have different DE isos, xfce, MATE, Cinnamon, budgie, Plasma (my personal preference. If you don't need a desktop to look like Windos 10 menu wise then go for the latest based on Debian 13. You could take a look at Q4OS 6.4 (it's at r.1, codenamed "andromeda"):
same Plasma release as current PCLOS Debian but a lower kernel. PCLOS Debian uses Liquorix kernel.
If you have time, take a look at Artix, multiple DE isos with multiple init choices without systemd.
Thanks. I tend to avoid anything Arch related. Too many bad experiences and hours down the drain already.
I ran Pop for two years with more or less no issues at all. I just wish they'd delayed the rollout of COSMIC for a bit.
I've just ordered a new case for the machine that doesn't require a PCIe riser. Once I have that and migrated the hardware, I'm going to reinstall a fresh copy of Zorin and see how that fairs.
