Zorin Forum: Navigating to older unread threads proving irksome

I have been away for a couple of weeks (you may not have noticed  ) and am trying to catch up with recent postings.
I have got through the new threads and am looking at older threads that show bold i.e. unread content.
To get to threads that are e.g. 11days old, I am mouse wheel scrolling like crazy or pecking PgDn 30times or more. There must be a better way!
In Prefeferences I have "Unread" setting for Default Home Page. But that seems irrelevant.
If only there was a way to return to the Topics list at the location of the thread that I last selected to read, that would help reduce keyboard and mouse wear and tear.
If there is a Forum setting that would achieve that, I'm all ears. Zab

(meanwhile back to punching PgDn a few more times)

I may have found a solution. Instead of clicking on "Topics" to read next thread, use browser Backpage :arrow_left:
That seems to get me back to where I was.

But if there is a better way, tell me.

Welcome back!

I'm not aware of any setting like that, but what I do is hold Ctrl as I click on a thread, and it opens it in a new tab. That way, I always have the first tab right where I left it.

You can also use the search feature to search for threads for a particular time period. For example, entering this would give you all posts that you haven't read dated October, 2024. after:2024-10-01 before:2024-10-31 in:unseen.

For reference:

Or that, yeah. That would work too

Oh my gosh, I've been using computer's my whole life, how in the heck did I not know about this time saving method? I tested it, and it works!

I still think it would be nice if all "Unread" topics were listed first, regardless of age, instead of having to scroll down past read topics to get to them. I thought that was the purpose of setting priority to "Unread" in Forum Preferences. Is there a bug in the Forum or just my understanding of "Unread". Zab

It looks like it's simply a different interpretation of unread:

By unread topics: Topics that youโ€™ve opened and read for at least 4 minutes but have new posts (replies) are marked with a number in a blue circle:

I couldn't find anything on the Discourse documentation to change or add new filter buttons. However, there is a way to work around that by creating your own links:

  1. Create a new section under the hamburger menu:

  2. Fill in the details as you want, and for the link use this URL:

    https://forum.zorin.com/search?q=in%3Afirst%20in%3Aunseen%20order%3Alatest

    sc2

  3. The new section will be available in the menu:

It's essentially a shortcut to the filtered search with whatever parameters you chose. I used in:first in:unseen so that any topic where you haven't read the first post would show up. So, not quite the same result, but on the bright side, you can use this as a browser bookmark too. And you can create whatever other views you want based on categories, solved, etc.

The problem with some unread topics is that they might be more than 90 days old, and therefore locked - just when you thought you could contribute something else!

This topic was automatically closed 90 days after the last reply. New replies are no longer allowed.
