This sounds like you are trying to save your backups to a drive that does not have write permissions.

You can launch terminal and use lsblk to determine your drives. Once you identify the one you want to save your backups to, use chown command to give yourself permission to write to it.
(Replace $USER with your username and /path/to/mountpoint with the path to the drive):

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /path/to/mountpoint

You can launch terminal by pressing the keyboard shortcut:
ctl+alt+t

Then type in

lsblk

and tap the enter key.
