Zorin OS 18 freezes after closing a game

Hello fellow users,

I have been using zorin os 18 for a month now and I love it. However, I noticed that every time I am playing a game, when I close it, the whole desktop freezes and is not letting me interact with it. So far, the fastest solution is making the Control+alt+f3 and rebooting but I would like to know if there is a more efficient and permanent solution for this issue so I dont have to restart the pc and need to restart my workflow. I am using it zorin os 18 fully updated as of today 03/07/26. I am using a ryzen 5 5600x and an RTX 4070 with updated drivers (Nvidia driver-590-open(Propietary tested) and 16gb ram 3600mhz. Using the desktop is fine but this error only happens when I close a game. Just to add I do close my game the correct way not with alt+f4. If anybody is experiencing the same issue and found a solution I would appreciate it if you can share it. :slight_smile:

Run nvidia-settings in the terminal, navigate to the X Server Display Configuration section, and save the changes to /etc/X11/xorg.conf to permanently apply the GPU power management settings.

  • Does Your System run in Wayland or X11? You can check that with the Terminal Command echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
  • Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled?
  • Do You play Games through Steam? If yes: Is it installed as Flatpak or .deb Version?

Since the freeze happens after closing games, it might be related to GPU state cleanup.
