Zorin OS for schools

I have connections to a private school and public school. I personally like Zorin, but I only have a couple of weeks of experience.

One thing I've noticed is that there is not enough marketing material for Zorin OS Education, short of installing it and showing someone.
Most schools, public and private, make decisions based on board members and in this case the IT manager. Everyone knows Windows, few know Zorin.
There is an awesome generic Zorin advertisement, but not one specific to education. Another thing I think would be useful is a short interview, or even better a documentary, with the city in Italy. What has been their experience, etc.
Zorin Grid is also necessary and it's great that's being worked on.
Maybe a partnership with OpenEducat to further drive home that this is the platform schools should use. It doesn't have to be OpenEducat, this is just an example.

You got me thinking about the Canvas debacle earlier this month. The largest educational data breach in history. 9000 schools worldwide! Studies disrupted right when most critical. Names, emails, student IDs, and millions of private messages between students and teachers stolen and threatening to be released if a ransom isn't paid by the 12th of this month. Yikes.

There needs to be a layered approach to prevent this sort of thing in the future. I dialoged a bit with my favorite AI, and came up with a four layered strategy:

1. The OS Layer:

  • Local First: Pre-install the Zorin Education suite (LibreOffice, KolourPaint, Stellarium, Scratch, etc.) so they run locally with zero internet required.
  • Zorin Grid Management: Use Zorin Grid (the remote management dashboard) to push security patches and software updates in the background. Critically, these updates should be staged locally so a network outage doesn't prevent a student from booting up.

2. The Identity Layer:

  • Problem: If the school’s Active Directory (AD) or LDAP server is ransomed, students can’t log into their own laptops.
  • Possible solution: Each student’s Zorin login should be tied to a local cryptographic key stored in the device's TPM (Trusted Platform Module).
    Students and teachers could then log in and access local files even if the school’s network is totally dark.

3. The Data Layer:

Instead of a "My Documents" folder that only exists on a school server:

  • Local-First Storage: Every file is saved locally to each individual computer first.
  • P2P Sync (Syncthing/IPFS): Use an open-source tool like Syncthing to automatically mirror the data across the student’s phone, laptop, and a school "Edge Node" in the classroom. Because the data exists in three places at once, a ransom attack on the central server becomes less of a catastrophe.

4. The Network Layer:

  • Edge Servers: Instead of one central data center for the whole district, each classroom or building could have a small server, running Zorin Grid.
  • Local Wireless Mesh: If the main internet line is compromised, the classroom Wi-Fi still connects students to that local server. There they can still take the quiz, submit the essay, and chat with the teacher because the "data loop" is 30 feet long, not 3,000 miles.

You mentioned the need for more emphasis on Zorin Education in the marketing materials, etc. You're not wrong. But what if you were to pioneer its use, along with Zorin Grid. Document the success story, and you'd become an ally in getting the word out.

Yes, the last two years have seen our various services hit with "hackers" or whatever you want to call it.
Cloudflare was hit a few times, and a couple of other services. Now Canvas. We've been told to have paper exams for finals just in case.
Also, you're right about the Internet issues. If the wifi goes out, students no longer have access to Canvas. We've become too reliant on the Internet for things.
