Translating (via Google Translate) for the convenience of those who will be viewing this in hopes someone can help him.
Hello everyone, I have such a problem, sometimes after restarting the icons on the desktop change the order of placement!
They become in a chaotic order!
I tried to set "Keep icon alignment" it just attaches them to the grid in order, then they can't be dragged or anything!!
I've already reset the icon binding to the screen grid a couple of times "killall -3 gnome-shell" - this helps for a while until a new icon appears on the screen..
A CRITICAL PROBLEM THAT WAS NOTICED BY ME IS THAT "SORTING" CANNOT REMOVE ALL THE CHECKS FROM SORTING - IT SPREADS THE ICONS AS THE SYSTEM BREAKS, AFTER EVERY REBOOT OR COMPLETELY SHUTDOWN THE SYSTEM THIS HAPPENS!
HOW TO TURN OFF THE SORTING FUNCTION COMPLETELY?
IT WORKS CHAOTIC AND I CANNOT TURN IT OFF, IT INSANELY INSULTS ME!!
SOMETIMES IT BECOME NORMAL AND SOMETIMES IT GOES WRONG AS THE SYSTEM GETS WRONG!
THIS NEEDS TO SOMEHOW TURN OFF THE SORTING FUNCTION, OR AT LEAST TO BE ABLE TO REMOVE ALL THE SORTING CHECKBOXES.
I NEED A SORTING FUNCTION - "NONE" TO TURN IT OFF, SO THAT THE ICONS DO NOT JUMP AS THEY GET WRONG!
Do you have tried to disable the gnome extension Zorin Desktop Icons and then enable it again? You can do this at
Zorin Appearance > Desktop > Show icons on desktop
or in extension-manager (if it is installed), alternatively with the terminal commands
gnome-extensions disable zorin-desktop-icons@zorinos.com
gnome-extensions enable zorin-desktop-icons@zorinos.com
So of course I'll try it now, I'm just tired of having to restore copies from Timeshift after every failure, it seems to me that I just have a lot of icons on my desktop and that's why.So of course I'll try it now, I'm just tired of having to restore copies from Timeshift after every failure, it seems to me that I just have a lot of icons on my desktop and that's why.
Maybe it helps to keep free the place on the desktop where desktop icons can be enabled with Zorin Appearance (upper left side, I think it are four or five icons which can be enabled there)
If you have fractional scaling enabled you could also test if it helps to disable it.
Fractional scaling is disabled, I use the standard icons and desktop, even the standard theme, here you just need to disable sorting somehow so that the system cannot change the position of the icons as it pleases!
no no it didn't help, the system continues to log me out, it does whatever it wants!!
I'm not the first with this problem and it hasn't been solved anywhere, where I read the forum.
that's what I mean, look at the screenshots, the system itself hangs out the icons as it wants and I'll probably switch to another one, because it's a problem!
why do I need this sorting that can't be turned off??!
it's a big problem that you can't turn off sorting!
you can look at the date and time it just does whatever it wants and you can't turn it off!!
The developers need to disable sorting altogether, add "none or disabled" and everything will be fine.
Now it's driving me crazy, I have to look for shortcuts in random places every time!
It's a childish problem but they don't fix it so I can't use the system anymore!
Of all the parameters tested, nothing helped there, either the grid snapping which is simply not needed or the sorting which works crookedly which cannot be turned off and the system is going crazy from it!
I'll probably choose regular Ubuntu and everything will be pretty much the same as here.
so far this is the only solution I found to block the system from changing the grid completely and then the new icons will fly out to the left corner!!
you can see that there this sorting is not turned off at all!
you will have to unlock the permission every time to put the icon where you need it and lock it again.
I haven't found anything else sensible.
unlock - "chmod 664 ~/.config/dconf/user"
lock - "chmod 444 ~/.config/dconf/user"
I have also just tested whether it is possible to enter a user-defined value '' for the arrangeorder, but this does not seem to be possible.
You could test to replace the Zorin Desktop Icons extension with another extension, e.g. "GTK4 Desktop Icons NG (DING)". Disable the Zorin one first before you install it.
so I considered these options but stopped at Lock Desktop, you can also find the extension but through the terminal it will be the best way.
download the game, unlock the grid, put the icon in the right place and wait 10 seconds for the system to record the grid coordinates, then lock and that's it))
That sounds good. Can you please explain where you have found that app/extension?
I didn't install it, I just heard that it existed, but I didn't install it!
Just searched but cannot find any such extension. I think @Forpli 's suggestion about DING is the solution:
" Desktop Icons NG (DING) is a modern GNOME Shell extension that provides advanced desktop icon management, including support for widgets, drag-and-drop, and improved multi-monitor handling. It is designed to replace older desktop icon extensions and offers better compatibility with Wayland and newer GNOME versions.
To disable or manage the desktop icons extension effectively:
- Use the Extensions application (install via
sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-prefs) to disable the built-in Desktop Icons extension under the "Built-in" section. - If using Desktop Icons NG (DING) , ensure it is the only desktop icon extension active. Having both the system extension and DING installed causes duplicate icons.
- To resolve conflicts, remove the legacy system extension:
sudo apt purge gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons
Note: This may remove
ubuntu-desktoporubuntu-desktop-minimal. Use with caution.
- For locking icon positions , DING supports free positioning or grid snapping via its preferences. Enable "Snap to grid" in the extension settings to keep icons aligned.
- To prevent accidental changes , consider using
gsettingsto disable icon auto-refresh or lock the desktop layout via file system permissions (e.g.,chattr +i ~/.config/gnome-shell/extensions/desktop-icons@csoriano/), though this is not recommended for regular use.
For best results, use DING exclusively and disable the default GNOME desktop icons extension via the Extensions app.

I would agree to @Forpli's Suggestion to try the Desktop Icons NG Extension instead of the Zorin-own one.
You could do that with the Extension Manager; it is a Tool for installing and managing gnome Extensions. You can find it in Gnome Software as Flatpak and .deb Package:
Install it and then open it. Scroll down on the ''Installed'' tab and disable the Zorin Desktop Icons Extension. Then go to the ''Browse'' Tab and search for desktop icons ng and install this.
An Alternative would be GTK4 Desktop Icons NG.
Thank you very much for your help, people, maybe I'll try it sometime.
I use this, but I'm satisfied with the standard solution with icons, it works great in X-Org, for Wayland it's better not to talk to him, it seems to me that there are more and more problems, although I don't need him!
I'll add another solution to the problem with shortcuts, if they are scattered, but the grid was normal before, just press the "F5" key when entering the desktop. I also used it, but until a certain time. I wrote here because I want to solve this problem and point out to developers that people don't know everything, especially those who are just switching to Linux.
