Alrighty. My daughter has been using her Huion tablet in Windows and i selected a model that should work in Linux with the intention of her using Linux She gave it a try ages ago and it didn't work properly. So she quit immediately. Linux is character building, after all
After very little fiddling (Linux drivers from the company!) - the tablet works with Linux and Zorin - but we cannot figure out a way for the resolutions to work properly.
The monitor is 1920x1200, and whether or not the tablet is attached - i can't seem to make it actually run at 1920x1080 - it says it is, but it doesn't appear to be any different to our eyes. The resolution is a problem, because the tablet is 1920x1080, and no matter what settings we try, the tablet display is "squished" (or nothing). She can't draw on it in such a state. We did some hunting but haven't had any success in either x.org or Wayland. Wayland is my strong preference.
On Windows, the desktop monitor adds 'letterbox' black bars at the top and bottom of the screen which allows the tablet to see the resolution 'correctly' and not squish it.
When she's finished, i'll grab her tablet and try it on my PC (Nobara, running Plasma) to see how it behaves here. We'll see if i can repeat it on a rather different flavour of Linux.
I will also reach out to Huion, but i figured i'd ask here simultaneously. I'm making an assumption that 'the community' will be more helpful than "the company". But who knows, Huion might surprise
Oh, forgot to mention the PC has an AMD graphics card.
Since they do design it for Ubuntu (which Zorin is based on) you be encountering this issue, it is possible however that it is a bug for them to fix for the Linux drivers.
Sounds like an interesting one either way, i'd imagine if your using the most up to date drivers and still encountering it letting Huion know is a good idea then they can patch it.
It also could be possible that the .deb has the issue and the .tar drivers do not or the inverse.
Hi, as Zorin 17 is based on Ubuntu 22.04 I used the latter in Brave A.I. search engine via mojeek:
Huion Tablet Display Ubuntu 22.04
If you are experiencing issues with the Huion tablet display appearing squished while running Ubuntu 22.04, there are a few steps you can take to address the problem. First, ensure that the correct drivers are installed for your Huion tablet. Huion provides beta drivers for Ubuntu, and these can be downloaded from their official website.3 The installation process involves either using a .deb package or a tar package, with the .deb package requiring a system restart to take effect.1
Once the drivers are installed, you may need to configure the display settings. If the display is still squished, you can use the xsetwacom utility to adjust the settings. This utility allows you to configure the tablet's settings, including the mapping of the drawing area to the display.2 You can check the current settings with the command xsetwacom --list devices to ensure that the tablet is recognized correctly.
If the issue persists, you might need to adjust the display settings within the operating system. This can be done through the display settings in Ubuntu, where you can adjust the resolution and scaling settings to better fit your monitor. Additionally, if you are using an NVIDIA graphics card, you may need to set the NVIDIA GPU to "Performance Mode" in the NVIDIA X Server Settings to ensure that the display is recognized correctly.4
By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the issue with the Huion tablet display appearing squished on Ubuntu 22.04. If you continue to experience problems, consider reaching out to Huion's support or the Ubuntu community for further assistance.
Try to switch to Xorg. The huion support says the driver doesn't support Wayland.
Reboot and at loginscreen click on your username, the a cog icon on the screen appears. There you choose Zorin Desktop on Xorg instead of Wayland.
I can confirm that i haven't tested my partners Huion in Wayland, so it could be worth noting.
To switch to Xorg do the following
Log-out
Click the password panel then a little gear in the bottom left will appear and choose "Zorin OS on Xorg"
Now you are using Xorg/X11 instead of wayland (if the resolution issue still occurs then its a driver problem if it no longer appears and the resolution is fixed then its just a wayland problem, at the end of the day with usability for this usecase as the focus, if you turn on the PC just for this usecase, then its easy to start logging in with Xorg and doing a quick log out and log in to change back to wayland.
We did try both Wayland and X.org. It didn't make any noticeable difference. I still haven't been able to wrestle the device out of her hands at a time i have also been available. I've done more reading and it doesn't look very positive But it must be somehow possible, because David Revoy refuses to accept defeat and uses Linux for his Tablet work.
I'm keen to try it on my PC. I also need to check if her PC has opentabletdriver installed/configured.
You would need to be on xorg to use the xsetwacom comnand I found earlier. (Yes I know Huion is not Wacom but the drivers and settings that Linux offers I suspect was around the fact that the 'industry standard' used by most Windows usees who are Artists was Wacom before third-party spin-offs appeared for Joe Public to afford a tablet.
I just wanted to report back that my daughter tried again recently and it works fine with either x.org or Wayland. I guess some driver stack in the kernel got updated or something?
Anyway, she's now plugging away on Linux instead of Windows
