Acer Aspire 4750 series (MS2316) not shutting down or rebooting completely

Hi everyone,
I’ve got this old Acer laptop, and I ran into some issues while trying to reinstall Windows 10. I already reached out to Acer support and the Windows community, but they both said the laptop only works with Windows 7.

So, I figured I’d give Linux (Zorin OS Core 18) a try since it’s usually more forgiving with older hardware. I also found a thread about a similar ACPI issue, (Laptop not shutting down or rebooting completely) but sadly, the fix didn’t work for my Acer.

Any ideas or suggestions on how to get this working? I’d really appreciate the help!

Did you try to add acpi=force to /etc/default/grub?

where can I find this? I'm sorry this is my first time to use Linux. can you walkthrough me on how to do this?

In the linked thread is linked a guide from Aravisian "[How to] add a kernel parameter".

Follow the steps there.

The file looks similar to this (Ponce-De-Leon, I took a screenshot from you)

Change the line

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force"

save the file and then run

sudo update-grub

and reboot.

If it doesn't help remove acpi=force and try it with acpi=off instead at the same place.

I already did, but still having the same issue.

It is important to run sudo update-grub afterwards to apply the changes.

Are secure boot and fast boot in your BIOS disabled and if you have a Dualboot with Windows is also fast startup disabled there at energy settings ?

There’s no Secure Boot or Fast Boot option in the BIOS since it’s an older laptop model. I upgraded the HDD to an SSD, but I suspect the BIOS may not fully support the SSD upgrade when using Windows. I also tried installing Linux, but it seems to have the same issue. I’m confident it was a clean installation because I selected the second option, “Erase disk.” Could you check this log? It might help identify what’s causing the problem.
