All packages are up to date, but Chrome not at current version

Hey everybody,

I have Zorin OS 16.1 CORE on a laptop and a workstation at home. Zorin was installed on both systems within 2 weeks of each other. Both systems report All packages are up to date when running apt update, but my Chrome version on the workstation reads: 99.0.4844.51, and the laptop reads: 100.0.4896.88.

uname -a on the workstation reports:

Linux workstation 5.13.0-35-generic #40~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 7 09:18:32 UTC 2022 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Is there any other package I can check against to see if this affects my entire system or if it's isolated to just Chrome? I suspect there might be something wrong with APT because I don't recall any updates on the workstation over the last two or three weeks.

I ran into some trouble with Steam a while back, maybe that somehow binds in to this?

Anything to point me in the right direction is much appreciated.

sudo apt update just updates the repositories, to do the upgrade run sudo apt upgrade

Yes, the system's Software Updater, and sudo apt upgrade && sudo apt upgrade are both satisfied, but Chrome is still behind.

sudo apt update shows:

--- trim ---
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
All packages are up to date.

and sudo apt upgrade shows:

--- trim ---
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Trying to manually install Chrome (google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb version: 100.0.4896.88-1) makes the software center hang at 95%.

I would compare the files /etc/apt/sources.list from both machines.

Don't use the software center just use the terminal

sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

and check if the issue is solved. Google Chrome adds a google repository in your sources. list directory to keep chrome up to date so check if it is there .

Thank you, I did diff -w sources-list-laptop.txt sources-list-workstation.txt. The only difference is the following at the bottom of the workstation's source.list.

> deb http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/ubuntu/ focal-updates restricted multiverse universe main
> deb http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/ubuntu/ focal-backports restricted multiverse universe main

I commented them out, and performed sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade, which made no difference, I then re-enabled them and performed the same commands. This time it showed me this:

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libapparmor1 libargon2-1 libcryptsetup12 libdevmapper1.02.1 libip4tc2 libmpdec2 libpython3-stdlib libpython3.8-minimal
  libpython3.8-stdlib libreadline8 libsqlite3-0 mime-support python3 python3-minimal python3.8 python3.8-minimal readline-common systemd
  systemd-timesyncd
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.

Didn't catch it was going to yoink Python and Systemd. So yeah. That happened. Now trying to reinstall Python gives me a ton of dpkg and dpkg-query errors. Ayylmao.

Yeah, I'll be ok. Just a lot of work setting software up on a slow internet connection. Downloading the ISO now.

can you try sudo apt-get update --fix-missing
and sudo apt --fix-broken install
Try this guide : Use apt-get to fix missing and broken packages

I gave it a shot, sudo apt-get update --fix-missing didn't complain, but sudo apt --fix-broken install gives the exact same errors as sudo dpkg --configure -a. I also tried the commands suggested in the guide. Looks like I've landed myself in some sort of dependency loop or something.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys, I'll just bite the bullet and do a reinstall. Classic case of problem exists between chair and keyboard. :relieved:

Cheers!
