Announcement: Canonical Ubuntu Server Outages and Status

Yesterday on the Canonical Ubuntu forum a user posted the Ubuntu X account got hacked. Tweet also contained a link leading to a Crypto scam.

What a catastrophic week it's been at Ubuntu.

I tested the free version of ProtonVPN on my phone recently. But some websites that usually worked fine wouldn’t load at all. I also kept getting a message several times a day saying that my network was generating unusually high traffic and that I had to prove I wasn’t a robot. Then I had to complete a bunch of tasks. It was really annoying.
So I uninstalled the VPN. For me, there are just too many restrictions associated with it. Too bad!

After all the Security updating and the Ubuntu Pro build out... FIPS, core hardening, etc. I would say that, the worst for Canonical is yet to come. It's just amazing that Canonical doesn't practice what they preach. And hardly a word from Canonical about the situation. I wish them all them all the best, and will still support ZorinOS.

Never switch your VPN off, espacialy in this unclear situation, its for sure not a Proton prob.

Going away from Zorin is worst that can be done - zorin has to be supported exactly based on the current unstable situation, pls rely on zorin, zorin is bringing an unwanted transparency. On my LM there is nothing to see, that means a std user believes everything is on track while no errors are show up, even the LM forum is quiet on this topic.

we all have to handle this

It looks to me as if this is definitely VPN-related. I switched my VPN off for 5 minutes, disabled the kill switch, and the updates came in super-fast. After enabling the VPN, the Software Updater is dead again. How strange that a privacy-based system should be intolerant of a privacy feature.

My Guess (not a Fact) to this would be: I could imagine that they have some extra Traffic Controls active that might block more what wants Access which could affect using VPN.

Ah no, I certainly wasn't suggesting that as a fact - I was just wondering if it's a possibility.

No, no. Sorry. That wasn't good worded by me. With the Guess, I meant what was coming in my Comment. Sorry. I will reformat it to make it clearer.

Ubuntu/Canonical doesn't give me the vibe of something professional I guess.

I just tried the following:

  • setting up an vpn that ends up in uk
  • launchpad was reachable und packages where downloaded

If it becomes true, that canocial is droping of certain ips, this will become a big mass.

PS: it just turned out, that the german mirror at hosteurope is not reachable via an german (vpn)ip, but reachable as described above with an uk IP that is redirecting the packages to germany.

YES, its pointing out that canonical is blocking ip on an old style level, or otherwise, looks like they are leaking in up to date security - sorry for that

Hello people!

I had no problems in the last 24 hours or so. Updated both canonical, and launchpads from zorin and Linux Surface. I hope that this helps everyone.

As soon as this problem seems to be left behind, I will get back to you on a new thread, as I definitively need help to make some things work.

Cheers!

I managed to do updates to Z17.3 Core last night with no problems. But it did seem to take longer than usual.
