Ah, that is bad. So, he/she doesn't even can get in BIOS? Then maybe a Reset could help.
@Ponce-De-Leon a reset is not possible - the all-in-ones have a master password and if you forget it you can do nothing in the BIOS.
Ah, okay. That is bitter.
OK, don't know what happened but the desktop is there but no internet. Whilst logging in remotely there is an issue with the r8168-dkmsk package. Updated the system which is now running kernel 6.15. Having visited the realtek website the only r8168 driver available is for kernel 6.12 - does this mean dropping to 6.12 and if so how would I do this (using TeamViewer!)
I was wondering, as I have a spare USB/ethernet dongle whether this would circumvent the need to drop down to a lower kernel. Now the question is, if I send this out in a jiffy bag from UK to Arizona is it likely to be confiscated at customs?
How did You updated the Kernel? Do it in the same Way like you have installed the 6.15 Kernel.
Well, nowadays You never know, but I wouldn't think that it will be a big Problem. When You make a Declaration for Customs Control, I guess it should land where it is needed. But it could take some Time.
I used TeamViewer to take over the machine and ran Software Updater. sudo seemed to be working too. They paid too many $ for a Tech guy who just changed the name of the new router from Verizon and never looked at the machine to try and sort it out.
After dealing with them on a call center 18 years ago, I already had a bad taste in my mouth dealing with them, just to inquire into internet service.
(1) American company using an India call center, accent so thick, can't understand them at all, and can't find common ground. This is how you know an American company has no pride in their company, when you can't even talk to a freaking American who speaks English.
(2) The guy kept trying to sell me junk I don't want, and lets me know he can't give me the service I want. They want to offer me dish net, but can only offer 10mb down. I don't want that junk! You cant do 4K, you can't download huge games in reasonable time, ug.
(3) They want to charge way too much for the service, & of course I have to pledge my allegiance to their company, to get onboard the overprice service with their stupid box, which will provide poor connection service, cause satellite is not the most reliable service there is.
(4) Now I'm hearing your story about their shoddy techs, who are overpaid for doing nothing, but show up to your place, with a face. Verizon is absolute garbage IMO. Had the for awhile for for landline phone way back in the day, their just garbage now.
I'm really not surprised of your experience, if you could get cable internet service from a real provider, that would be the best. You want fast reliable service, and you don't want to pay over 150 a month for it.
No, that is not likely to happen.
The tech guy was from a 'tech' company, nothing to do with Verizon. He brought a wifi dongle but it did not work. I tried to install the current driver for the ethernet chipset, but this was after I changed her settings to Main Server which installed kernel 6.15 and the driver was for 6.12.
Hm...And there is Zorin OS running? Only switching to main server and updating the system won't install kernel 6.15. Do you not have added manually a ppa to install a later kernel and installed kernel 6.15? When you have installed a mainline tool for cappelican or tuxinvader kernel you can select kernel 6.12 there in the gui.
I didn't recognise the mirtor at all that was present, but I changed it to Main Server, then did an update and it installed 6.15 which also surprised me.
You should not need to roll back the kernel. In fact, updating to the later kernel may help.
Can you using Teamviewer or the end user run in terminal:
sudo apt purge r8168-dkms
sudo modprobe r8169
From everything you describe, it sounds like the driver was offloaded. But the 8168 package will complicate rather than replace - and the in-kernel 8169 should work solidly.
And the Person uses Zorin and got the 6.15 Kernel? Did You checked the Sources with a sudo apt update
?
I went to attempt to post the dongle yesterday but because I rolled up a pre-used jiffy bag from Amazon it was too small for the customs label and postage label. Perhaps just as well as I need to check if it will work with Zorin in the first place before searching for alternative packaging. Of interest, US has increased postal charges/tarriffs to such high levels that postal items from UK have dropped by 80% so I need to take that into consideration too.
Valid. Is the end user unable to order the compliant and compatible adapter?
I haven't heard from them. I advised they try you last solution you posted about applying the r8169 module.
[Update: Just phoned and some packages were missing. Have advised member to get this:
Which is basically the same as the Asus one I was going to send them:
