I am trying to help someone in Arizona who has an HP All-in-one (out of warranty). The member is running Zorin 17 and lost internet connection via Ethernet. All Verizon can say is they don't know enough about [GNU/]Linux to resolve network issues. On my searches basing it on Ubuntu 22.04 on which Zorin 17 is based came back with:
" If your Ethernet connection is down on Ubuntu 22.04 and Verizon support is unhelpful, several troubleshooting steps can be taken. First, check the system kernel logs for errors related to the network interface using dmesg > dmesg.log and look for any issues with the Ethernet driver, especially if you have a Realtek chipset, which can sometimes be unreliable. Use lspci -k to identify the specific driver in use."
If anyone else can offer advice as I live in the UK and no experience of Verizon, would appreciate any additional pointers.
Worked it before and came from one Moment to another? Or is it a fresh Install and doesn't work?
Switching to Xorg would be something to suggest. sudo lshw -C network would be something to identify the built-in Network Stuff. And does only Ethernet not work or Wifi, too?
If he has a ethernet driver that is included in the kernel and there was a kernel update that leads to a regression, he could also try to boot into the previous kernel at grub menu>advanced options for Zorin.
Also he can check if secure boot, fastboot and fast startup are disabled.
Sometimes a full shutdown of the computer with pulling out power cable can help.
I did think about possible update causing the issue. My other concern is if the ethernet chip has fried (died) and if it has whether an HP all-in-one could utilise a USB ethernet adapter like those used by Asus notebooks? I never thought about the classic solution:
Recently the wifi stopped working on Smart TV. Searching suggested same solution as @StarTreker but i only had to poeer off TV, unplug it for 10 seconds (made it 20), powered backup and wifi rehconnected.
@swarfendor437 Does the Arizona user have other devices that connect to the Verizon internet OK. i.e. is it just the HP PC on Zorin that doesn't?
Are they dual-booting? If yes, does Verizon internet work on Windows?
As others have suggested.
If Verizon internet worked then didn't, then I would explore the Kernel Update scenario and boot an older kernel to test that.
Power cycling the Verizon Modem would be a quick win also.
It is a driver that is included in the kernel. So the best would be to boot into previous kernel before trying this solutions. For that no internet is needed.
The other PC ia another all-in-one and boots to a black screen. Latest DM was this:
"The internet went out by itself. One minute it was there and then it was out.I was on the phone with Verizon for 1 1/2 hours each with 3 different people in the last few days and for a while, I was plug into my phone's hotspot, and getting internet until the Verizon folk messed that up
This cant be happening right now. I have so much work to do. AARGH!"
A lot of tech companies don't want to support anything but Windows or their own routers. Verizon have sent out a new router, but now it looks like Zorin is corrupted as sudo is coming back with module sudo not installed and cannot find install.
This feels to me like a reinstall is needed but this may not be possible. This is a member who forgot the boot password on their HP All-in-One and once out of warranty, HP don't want to know. This is why I prefer alternative OS's that offer the setting up of a different password for root (Debian based such as Q4OS and PCLOS Debian and rpm based PCLOS), unlike Ubuntu and forks which creates a randomised password that can never be changed.
I would never buy an HP computer, I have reasons not to trust them, going back 25-years now. When I bought my new computer in 2021, I bought an MSI machine, who is one of the leaders in gaming computer's.
