Anyone Having CPU Fan Issues RECENTLY?

I'm suddenly having CPU fan issues where I walk up to my desktop and it's all lethargic and when I check CPU temperature it's running high and no fan noise.

Anyone else having this issue lately (psst, that's my question) I suspect it came from a recent update.

If you just updated, it's possible a newer kernel version has updated and had a regression that isn't particular to your system's components. You could try booting into an older kernel at startup in Grub and see if the same issue occurs. That would be my first thought, anyway.

To do that.
From startup grub menu, select "Additional Options for Zorin"
then select previous kernel generic version listed there.
Boot that kernel.

It is a quick thing to try and to rule out if not the cause.

Did You checked if maybe the CPU Fan Cable is loose?

So you're having this issue too? (Psst, that was my question.)

And that the fan wasn't seized as well.

No I suspect @applecheeks37 doesn't. Remember the issue we have here is that migrators from that other OS all have different specs and ages. This is why I like other OS's that still support older kit with 32-bit images. Because the other OS('s) keep pushing the boundary, the Linux kernel is becoming more like that other OS in trying to support the latest hardware which is mainly going to be used by Gen Z for gaming, and as the world has an ageing population, most of us just want an OS that meets basic needs, respects privacy and is rock solid, and in itself does not begin to in someway automatically create e-waste by pushing the technological boundaries.

Has anyone just tried the simple roll-back to previous kernel from grub, to see if it was new kernel related. It does not take long to do and would quickly isolate one possible cause.

It just turned out to be a bad fan. I was suspicious because I had experienced the fan not working suddenly in the past and installed some software that got it going again. When no one else seemed to concur, I cleaned out the old fan w/ no luck, and then tried a new fan.

If cleaning the fan has succeeded, can you mark your last post as :white_check_mark:Solution.

There is a reason why new desktop computer cases, come with plastic mesh, or metal mesh screen filters, cause it only takes 1-year, for dust issues to become serious, and clog up a fan.

Also, depending on the type of fan it is, is how many hours of life it will last. Sleeved bearing was all you could get in the mid 1990's to early 2000's. Once Hydro Dynamic fluid bearing fans came to the masses, I snatched those up for my last desktop build, in 2007.

Hydro fluid dynamic bearing, are the best type of case fans you can buy, they have the longest lifespan, out of any previous case fan standard. They do cost more of course, but not what they did, to industrial applications, when they were invented in 1990.

PS: Fun note, hydro fluid dynamic bearing, is what mechanical hard drives use. It helped to increase their reliability, over the 80's and 90's mechanical hard drives, that would perma-park themselves into a grave after 10 to 15-years.
