Anyone using SlideShare Downloader on Zorin OS? Having a strange download issue

Hi everyone,

I recently switched to Zorin OS and overall everything has been been working really well.

The only problem I'm trying to solve is downloading presentation files from a SlideShare Downloader [Removed Link by @Ponce-De-Leon] website. On Windows I never had any issue, but on Zorin OS (Firefox and Chromium) sometimes the download doesn't start, and other times it finishes but the PPT/PDF file looks incomplete.

I already tried:

Clearing browser cache
Disabling extensions
Testing both Firefox and Chromium
Trying a different internet connection
The behavior is still inconsistent, so now I'm wondering if this is a browser setting, a permission issue, or something related to Linux downloads.

Has anyone here experienced something similar with SlideShare Downloader or other file download websites on Zorin OS? If you fixed it, I'd really appreciate knowing what the cause was.

I tested it in a Zorin live session with brave browser, and for one presentation both downloads (pdf and ppt) worked (and all pages of the presentation displayed), for another I had problems to open the pdf.

In which package format are your browsers installed (flatpakt, apt, snap)? You could test it with an browser which is installed as .deb/apt package to see if it works then.

I know Edge is boasted for pdf viewing. Personally I would recommend you download Vivaldi.

wget https://downloads.vivaldi.com/stable/vivaldi-stable_amd64.deb

Then use Gdebi to install it:

sudo apt install gdebi

then

sudo gdebi-gtk

Click on File | Open and browse to download location. Gdebi then checks to make sure all dependencies are present and if no errors, click on the 'Install package' button.

Thanks for testing it on your side, I really appreciate it.

That's interesting because your results are pretty similar to what I'm seeing. Some presentations download without any problem, while others seem to fail or the PDF doesn't open correctly.

My Firefox is installed through the default APT package, while Chromium is the Flatpak version. I haven't compared different package formats properly yet, so I'll try installing another browser as a .deb/APT package and see if the behavior changes.

Thanks for suggestion. I didn't think about trying Vivaldi before. I will install it and test if downloads work better there. Hopefully it's only browser related.

The download times were unusually long for me, even for just a few pages - unlike what's usually the case with browser downloads.

I had a really bad feeling about that site. I wanted to download a short 10-page presentation, but when it was unzipped, it turned out to be hundreds of MB, nearly 1 GiB. That seemed very suspicious to me. Like a zip bomb...I've never seen this before when downloading presentations/pdf on normal websites.

I’m bringing this up bevcause I’m trying to speed up the extraction process in Zorin 17 Core/Lite and Zorin 18 Lite (so that it is as fast as extracting with Nautilus in Zorin 18 Core), but I’m a little concerned that this might make it easier for something like that to happen. On the other hand, all file managers in Zorin are configured by default so that the contents of an archive aren’t opened before the archive is extracted and I wouldn't know what to check there. E.g. when you use xarchiver, it shows the content of the archive first, file-roller is not setup this way by default, but you could change it.
