Apple Cinema 20" display driver problem

  1. On boot Zorin17.2 jammy with 2nd display connected (Apple home Cinema A1081 ); then zorin starts with 2nd display "unknown display" resolution 640 x 480 (4:3), refresh rate 59.94, fractional scaling on.

  2. With Zorin running - From a 2nd display black screen and display led 3short flashes - If I then plug in the apple power adaptor, then Zorin (settings> display settings) now shows 2nd display as "Apple Computer Inc 20", and the driver shows all resolutions listed from 800 x 600 (4:3) smallest up to 1680 x 1050 (16:10) largest. In short the unknown display driver doesn't do the least resolution possible and screen stays black.

  3. On boot with 2nd display power adapter unplugged A1081; then Zorin starts with 2nd display setting (or detected as) Apple Computer Inc 20" and resolution 1680 x 1050 (16:10). with this driver I have to connect the power adaptor to A1081 and magically it works.

Would it be possible to have the unknown display to have an alternative resolution as default, so the powered up Apple Cinema display works from boot.

You could try it with disabled Fractional Scaling.

Well that was worth a try but when tried -
I set the Fractional Scaling to off then APPLY, then Keep new settings.
Did Power Off (via the two Off/On icons then confirm button

1st by powering off both PC and the 20" apple display, it reverted to unknown monitor with a black screen, with unuseable resolution.

2nd tried same by simple restart but same result unknown monitor

How are the Monitors connected? HDMI? Display Port?

1st display Samsung 34" on HDMI to HDMI, 2nd monitor 20" apple A1081 is DVI to DP adapter thanks

(1) You admit to using an adapter to go from DVI to to DP, that alone cold be an issue. I've learned to be wary of cable adapters.

(2) I noticed that your not using DP port for your best Samsung 34" monitor. IMO, you should be connecting your 34" monitor to DP, to get the best quality out of that monitor.

(3) And you should get a DVI to HDMI cable, to directly plugin your 20" Apple monitor to the HDMI port instead.

Making these changes alone, could yield better results with your computer. Now, I don't know if you have Intel integrated graphics, or Nvidia/AMD graphics for your GPU.

Please run the following command into terminal.

lspci

Then please copy/paste that here, so that we may take a look at what you have.

Well the A1081 has no DVI port on the monitor, it has apple cable coming centrally out of the monitor aluminum case - it is a hybrid cable split off at the far end with the DVI c male connector, proprietory apple 5 pin male power plug (to power adaptor), a firewire plug, a USB 2.0 type a plug. Also the Samg has HDMI ports so I used an HDMI cable. The P4 pc has 1 xDP; 1 x HDMI, and 1 x USB 3.? type c port, those 3 ports all are 8K for display.

Seemed logical to connect HDMI port to HDMI Samsung34 monitor, leaving DP available for DVI adapter, and the front USB typeC unpopulated being on front panel.

@Ponce-De-Leon @StarTreker I really appreciate your suggestions here - thanks.

I think the HDMI to HDMI connection is fine. But the Adapter Thing could be a Thing ... Only for testing: do You have another Monitor with fitting Conections that You could connect and check if there the Picture is good?

Have just tested connect 34"samsung with HDMI port, HDMI cable, adapter HDMI to DP. That works fine via DP which doesn't test the DPI(c) to DP brand new adapter but that works fine after power cycle the apple psu. When undetected the apple A1081 led error code is 3 x short, short, short flashes.

I still think that the (generic) undetected driver needs alternative (more modern) resolution(s)

Your patience is epic. :star_struck:

Maybe this is something that You could use for an Apple Forum and ask there.

Well yes I had seen that, and thanks for searching @Ponce-De-Leon - credit where due.

For my error code apple is saying

led gives the 3 short, short, short flashes

short, short, short =
The display is detecting either a wrong video format, or an unsupported resolution.

Verify that your equipment is compatible, and then restart the computer.
If the issue continues, reset the PRAM.

If you have reset the PRAM and are still getting the error,
shut down the computer, power cycle the Cinema Display, then turn the computer back on.

I don't think there is any equivalent to PRAM on the Bosgame P4 (AMD R700) pc with AMD Radeon GPU.

Did You tried it with another Resolution Setup?
