I recently made the switch to Zorin (Core version) after leaving Windows 11, and I'm genuinely enjoying the experience.
However, while personalizing my desktop, I installed and started using the Arc Menu extension. It's fantastic, but after several days of use, a serious issue emerged: when my laptop goes into sleep mode and is then woken up (resumed), I get an error pop-up, the system crashes, and I am logged out.
When I log back in, the desktop environment is completely destroyed. I can only see my wallpaper, and the taskbar is misplaced at the top of the screen (my original location is the bottom) and is completely bare—no start menu, no icons.
I can still launch applications by pressing the Super key and using the "search" function. Doing this, I opened Zorin Appearance and discovered that all desktop layouts have completely vanished. It looks as if they have been uninstalled. I was able to temporarily fix this using the terminal, but the crash and layout deletion occurs reliably every time the laptop sleeps.
I'm puzzled as to why this happens and it really disrupts my workflow. Is it possible that the issue is related to disabling the default Zorin Menu extension when Arc Menu is enabled? (Zorin Menu has to be disabled so I don't see a double start menu, one from Arc and one from Zorin).
Has anyone encountered this problem or have any suggestions on how to resolve this recurring crash?
Many users have reported the issue of crash upon wake - but you are the first to suggest that Arc Menu is related.
You may test this by disabling extensions, using the Zorin Menu, then checking for crash on wake. If there are no crashes for several rounds of consistent testing, then switch to Arc Menu and test for crashing...
Hello Aravisian. I will definitely test this out, but as you mentioned, maybe this is not an Arc Menu problem. I googled this and seems like Gnome has this problem since a long time when computers goes into sleep mode/wake up. Maybe it could also be associated with AMD cpus? Mine is a HP G10 Laptop with a Ryzen 5 7530U.
Could also be Wayland. I would try logging out and logging in with xorg (using the little gear before logging in). Wayland still has a lot of unresolved conflicts with Mutter (GNOME Window Manager).
That will show all the kernels that you have installed.
I suspect that there is a regression for the AMD GPU driver in the kernel. You are on 6.14.0-36...
I am wondering if the 6.12 kernel might work better.
If you already have an earlier kernel installed, you can roll back to it by choosing that kernel to boot from in the Grub Menu> Advanced Options for Zorin
Oh, and is there a way to install 6.12 kernel? I am sorry for making so many questions, but it's literally my first days on Linux... or do you have any idea how I could fix the GPU drivers?
Here it's what that command you sent me says:
ii linux-image-6.14.0-33-generic 6.14.0-33.33~24.04.1 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-6.14.0-36-generic 6.14.0-36.36~24.04.1 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-generic-hwe-24.04 6.14.0-36.36~24.04.1 amd64 Generic Linux kernel image
You can try the -33 one... since you already have it.
Reboot - tap tab or esc at the Motherboard splash screen to make the Grub Menu appear if it does not appear at boot by default.
From that menu, select Advanced Options for Zorin using the Arrow Keys.
Then arrow key to Zorin on 6.14.0-33 and tap the enter key.
Once booted, ensure you are on -33 using uname -r in terminal.
IF still no good... You can install the 6.12 with the mainline installer
bu11etpr00f I want to thank you for taking your time to help. I assume it could be that problem as well. But as of now, I have not found any reason or real solution for this problem. However, I will explain what I did to "fix" this in a lower comment that might help other people.
Aravisian, I could not fix it. And I had little time to try many things this week. So, to fix it fast I just entirely disabled sleep mode. And now the computer completely avoids the problem. It's the only way I found. However, its important to mention the problem WAS NOT caused by Arc Menu at all. Thank you so much for your time and help!!
