Backup reinstall advice

Greetings , recently switched to Zorin pro on my 14' macbook pro , got tired of planned obsolescence from Apple and misc software. Very happy still figuring a few things out but I do have a question. I managed to entirely miss the option of encrypting my entire drive on the original install and now Im trying to figure out the best way of redoing that ? , backup the entire drive Im guessing ? ( is there a native backup option within Zorin ? ) and then wiping the drive and using the backup reinstalling the copy ? . Any advice would be appreciated , thanks in advance , Take care.

Hi and welcome.

First I advise you backup your entire system using Rescuezilla.

Then, as Zorin is a fork of Ubuntu 24.04, see if this ubuntuhandbook entry helps:

Yes Rescuezilla is what i use to an external ssd so if stuff goes way wrong i can reclone back to where i was.....also you can use timeshift for a fast fix as well

It's great to hear you're enjoying Zorin OS on your MacBook Pro and taking control of your system. Encrypting your entire drive is an important step for security, and you're on the right track with backup and reinstallation.

Entire drive encryption is extremely secure. To the point of overkill.
The option exists, but you really only need that level of security if you work for the CIA or something.
If anything happens to corrupt the key or you forget your password - There is no recovery option - at all.
Everything is lost.

So, I advise users to instead practice more rational security measures. If you need only certain data encrypted, like banking information, etc, to use a a standalone program within to encrypt only that data.
