Bad battery life on Zorin OS

Hello everyone,

Im loving Zorin OS but I have a small issue. My battery is dying very fast. On windows I was getting 5-6 hours of battery life and now on Zorin OS I get 1hour and 30 mins. Ive also noticed my laptop is a bit hotter running Zorin OS too. I have a ASUS g14 with a AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS and a RTX 4060. Any help on improving the battery and heat issue would be amazing. Thanks.

Hi and welcome. Hmm, I remember LXF magazine commenting on Ryzen 9 being a bit toasty. Is it cooled by fans? How old is the machine? Have the fans ever been cleaned with can of air?

Brave A.I. search results advise:

"Updating the kernel to a newer version, such as kernel 5.7 or later, might improve compatibility with your hardware and reduce overheating.
Installing the TLP power management tool can also help reduce overheating by optimizing power settings.
Additionally, disabling Turbo Boost in the BIOS can prevent the CPU from running at excessively high frequencies, which can cause overheating.
If your laptop has a discrete GPU, switching to the integrated GPU can reduce heat generation and improve battery life.
Cleaning the laptop's vents and ensuring proper airflow can also help maintain lower temperatures."

Hi, thanks for the reply. The laptop is two years old, battery replaced a year ago. Will Try the bios settings you mentioned. Do you know how I would be able to switch to integrated graphics instead? Thanks.

Edit: Yes cooled by fans and should be fairly clean

Can you please open a terminal (Ctrl+ Alt+ T) and enter:

sudo lshw -C video

and report back the results please.

Hi I was able to figure it out thanks. Installed TLP also and it seems to be better. Thanks again!

Hey, I just wanted to link you the video about auto-cpufreq. Take a look and see if you'd want it.
From github page: auto-cpufreq aims to replace TLP in terms of functionality, so after you install auto-cpufreq it's recommended to remove TLP .
