Black screen after installing new graphics card

Hello,

I've been running Zorin quite happily now for a while. But my graphics card, an RTX3060, is starting to show its age, so I figured I was due an upgrade.

I bought a 5060Ti, which seems to have similar power requirements to the 3060, and popped it in. I get a display in the BIOS and the Grub loader, but then it just goes black and the monitor turns itself off for lack of a signal.

Things I have tried:

  • Booting off a USB stick with the Zorin installer on it in normal mode
  • Booting off a USB stick with the Zorin installer on it in safe graphics mode
  • Booting off a USB stick with the Zorin installer on it with nVidia drivers

All produce the same result.

If I put the old graphics card back in, it boots normally.

I'm on Zorin 18 Pro, kernel 6.17.0-20-generic, nVidia driver version 580.126.09.

Any and all pointers would be helpful! Thanking you in advance.

When You are on GRUB, choose ''Advanced Options'' and choose there an Option with ''Safe Graphics'' to start. Then, I would suggest to uninstall the Nvidia Driver with:

sudo apt purge nvidia* libnvidia*

and

sudo apt autoremove

to remove Files Rests. But take a Look at the List with the to be removed Files before You delete them. Then switch Your Graphics Card to the new one and start the System, log in and install the Graphics Driver again.

Also, I recommend using the 6.18 kernel if possible or even falling back to the 6.14

The 6.17 (depending on point release) has had notorious problems negotiating with Nvidia cards.

The odd thing is that safe graphics doesn't seem to work either - at least, not when booting from a Zorin installer image.
