Black screen - bricked?

I have been using Zorin for several years now. Yesterday while online a message - "Disc space needed - delete Trash" (not exact, but along those lines). I clicked to allow Trash delete, continued as usual and signed off. Today when I tried to boot/sign on, the Lenovo logo appeared, then Zorin under it, and then went to a BLACK SCREEN with one tiny pixel on upper left corner. Pushing the 'on' button just shut down the laptop.

I've been reading here about black screens with these attempts -

  • Holding ctrl+alt+F1 did NOT get me to BIOS

  • Esc pushed at boot got me to GNU GRUB Version 2.06 with message - "Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB Lists possible device or file completions." I am not a confident 'terminal' user so only tried 'exit' which closed that window and shut down laptop.

  • I am not able to get much info out of my laptop so an clueless about its guts/settings. Label on it says -

  • IDEAPAD - 3i Intel CORE i5

I have a USB that I had set up to install Zorin 17.2 OS ready, have inserted it into USB and booted - does NOT read USB, only goes to Lenovo screen with Zorin appearing under logo and then to black screen.

Any thoughts, hints etc. are greatly appreciated!! I had to set up a 2nd account here using hubby's laptop which is currently my only online vehicle, and I will have to 'elbow' hubby  to get access in immediate future. Of course I am grinding my teeth that I didn't do an update from (current) Zorin core 16.? to 17.2 that is on the USB stick - oh well, 20-20 hindsight . . .

Many thanks for any feedback - fingers crossed my laptop is not bricked! (Jain Daugh via sandbill)

No, probably not bricked. Most likely, your disk ran out of space.

From this screen type

exit

and relay the output here.

Took several tries but finally got to GNU GRUB menu - typed exit and results were black screen (one pixel upper left corner) as before.

I am guessing that the 'disk out of space' is the problem? Can I 'correct' that at this point? Or would be better to 'awaken' this sleeping devil and then deal with full disk?

From that terminal, after typing exit
You might try clearing some space:

sudo apt clean && sudo apt autoremove

Clear old logs:

journalctl --vacuum-time=10d

Then follow the steps in this guide to repair grub (It looks daunting, but as you go, you will see it is easy).

Did You changed the Boot Order so that it can start? Or did you pressed the button to start the Boot Option Screen from Your BIOS? I have a Gigabyte Board and it is the F12 Key but in Your Case it can de a different one.

If You are able to start the Zorin USB Stick, choose the ''Try Zorin'' Mode to start Zorin in Live Mode. search for the Program ''Boot Repair'' and let it run. Maybe that can help.

To get in BIOS, I think it would be easier to press the normal BIOS Button immediately after starting Your Machine again and again. Maybe You need several Try's. This Key Combination is as far as I remember not made to get into BIOS. It is made to open a Terminal Window.

The laptop does not appear to be in the terminal - only in GNU Grub "Minimal BASH-like Line editing". When I tried your suggested first (terminal) command, the (grub>) reply was -

syntax error. Incorrect command. syntax error.

Is there a keyboard command/shortcut that I can try to get to the terminal? Currently I am 'stuck' with GNU Grub.

Ponce, I am unable to see anything about my laptop! Is there a way I can get to see BIOS? I have no idea what the Boot Order is and if it changed. The Zorin USB will not load up at this time. Thanks for your input. If you have other thoughts, I would be grateful for them.

Then, you will need to first repair grub. To do this, you must boot into a LiveUSB, just as you did when you installed Zorin OS.

At the GNU Grub line editing I tried typing -

boot usb

and Grub replied -

You need to load kernel first

The USB that I have is one that I made for upgrading from Zorin 16.? to Zorin 17.2. Isn't that a 'live' one? I can't get the laptop to boot it. Is there a way to make that USB 'live'?

Yes. Um... Why will the notebook computer not boot with it? Did it not boot when you used it to perform the upgrade?

I did not preform the upgrade, only prepared the USB (via download from Zorin web site) and was in process of preparing backups for data/files etc. I have no idea why the USB will not load up at all.

For many computers, F11 or F12 will show the boot order when you plug in the USB, then start the computer. Many show on the screen which key to press at the motherboard splash screen, as well.
I think you said you are using Ideapad - Lenovo; which is commonly F12
Or Fn+F12

You should switch off your computer completely. Then insert the stick and boot. Then immediately press the button for the Bios so many times until a message appears. The key can be F1, F2, F10, F12 or others - it depends on your computer. In the Bios, set the USB stick to the first position in the boot options.

The Zorin boot stick created with the iso file (used a special tool for doing this as e.g. Rufus or ventoy) can only be booted if it is in the first position in the BIOS to be booted from. It does not work like a normal USB stick that you can open after booting the operating system.

Is 'splash screen' the letters/notes displayed (which flash on and quickly off!) at start up? If so, how to PAUSE so I can look at/read that?

Yeah, sometimes it can be quick...

When you see that screen, try mashing that F12 key like you were playing Mortal Kombat.

Hooray! - I at least was successful at getting to Boot Manager! However, pressing the [up arrow] or [down arrow] keys do not show any Options - only 'stuck' in -

ubuntu (SAMSUNG MZALQ256HBJD-00BL2)

Any ideas how to get to USB option so I can set that?

Zorin is called ubuntu. The stick must be displayed as USB...

Gotta LOVE your 'Mortal Kombat' reply!! I am so not a game geek, but I am not afraid to MASH keys if necessary

And your stick was inserted before booting? It does not work when you put it in later.
