Hello, with the recent AI boom and the end of support for windows ive opted to move to Zorin 18, with that ive built an AMD build but im having issues getting blender cycles to work.
ive already tried following the guide here:
and this did not work at all, even uninstalling the drivers and starting fresh did nothing different. for some reason blender does not seem to register the GPU at all
my Kernel version is: 6.14.0-37-generic
im using an AMD 9800x3D CPU and a AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT.
I am new to Linux in general so im not exactly sure what other information i can provide but i do need to get cycles working at some point and really do not want to get windows 11. Thank you for your time!
I'm not on Zorin OS, but tested Blender on Solus Linux. I went for native package instead of flatpak. If you use flatpak try use Zorin OS (native package) instead.
Hello! thank you for the response, unfortuneately when using the Zorin Os native package rather than the flatpack, simply clicking on HIP triggers blender to crash.
Im not sure how much it would help but ive attached the crash log:
Hello, it took me longer than id like to admit getting the kernel updated, i was able to get the kernel onto: 6.17.11-1-liquorix-amd64 as the only stable one that wouldnt have an immediate kernel panic. unfortuneately though blender is still not reconizing the GPU, flatpack or otherwise
Hello again, my replay to your response and Ponce-De-Leon are accidentally out of order, but I did attempt this aswell both on kernel 6.14.0-37-generic and 6.17.11-1-liquorix-amd64, it unfortuneately did not change anything with being able to access the GPU for HIP
yes, i downloaded flatseal, re-downloaded the flatpak and set it to standard settings, tested if it would detect the GPU just to be sure before fiddeling with various setting that baised on what i read could toggle the use of the GPU, i repeated this after updating the kernel aswell just to be sure
I did as you suggested and blender is not detecting the GPU still, im really not sure what could be causing this at this point, it could be an issue with blender itself
Wanted to post an update here:
im not entirely sure why how or anything but despite trying everything under the sun, from using the Zorin os version, Steams download version, installing directly from terminal, the flatpack version, and the snap verison
it was finally managed to get working with the steam version by forcing compatability mode with Steam Legacy Runtime 1.0
i have zero idea why this worked, but it worked, thank you all for your time
