Boot fail after Ubuntu 22.04 upgrade

Hi all,

New to the forum and fairly new to Linux and Zorin.

Been using it for about 6 months and just hit my first issue that I have no clue how to resolve.

Updated the latest software updates and also got a pop-up for Ubuntu upgrade to 22.04.1 LTS (think that’s right). Followed that with the recommended settings and unfortunately, after completion I can’t boot in to Zorin any more.

Above image shows how far I get booting up.

Created the install USB, booted to that and tried the repair boot option but it didn’t find any errors. No option to repair.

The OS sits on an encrypted partition, mounted it before running the boot repair tool.

Now scratching my head and couldn’t find anything else relevant on the forum.

Please help

Try booting into an older kernel in Grub

Can I get to grub from the screen that I posted to do that?

I tried mashing ESC or Tab during the boot sequence after reading another post but couldn’t get to the menu to access grub.

Never used it before so fumbling in the dark a bit here…

Left Shift key.

To ask that: You were on Zorin 16 as You got this PopUp for Ubuntu Upgrade? Or on Zorin 17? Or are You on Ubuntu directly? Because a Pop Up window like that shouldn't come on Zorin I think.

I have seen this happen before on this forum... Every now and then, the Ubuntu Upgrader tool kicks in and notifies the user that they can upgrade to the later Ubuntu...
Sadly, the most often; the user ended up needing to reinstall. And this thread had an encrypted drive, so that complicates this one even further.

Damn, that doesn’t sound promising at all.

To confirm, was on Zorin 17. Guessing I should have ignored that upgrade screen… urghhhh

In hindsight, it looks clear. But just before, given that the base is Ubuntu, it seems safe.
This one really is on the devs.

It did, rather annoying that it wasn’t.

Thanks for that information… helps a bit.

I’ve gotten access to the folder structure through the install USB. Anything I can do to overwrite files and repair this?

First, you can copy the home folder to a USB and save the files.

Then you can reinstall Z17 and choose not to format root by using the "Something Else" installation type screen. That should keep the home folder untouched, and the rest will be overwritten. No 100% guarantees on this part, however.

You are supposed to see the grub menu before your computer boots, which looks like this

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I’m trying to get my hands on a drive large enough to copy off the Home folder and the time to do it. Will report back on whether I am successful or not. :crossed_fingers:

Thanks for the clarification. I have since seen that a number of times, ironically comes up more often now the installation is fooked. I also have a dual boot arrangement with Windows on another SSD. I wonder if that is why I didn’t see it before… I’ve always gone to the boot menu to select the Zorin OS.
