Has it gone?
That looks good. The Packages are Rests who are not deleted. When I see that right, it should give a Problem when You delete them with sudo apt autoremove but maybe wait for a 2nd Opinion on that.
Are you saying that I should put "sudo apt autoremove"? I am not sure if the problem has been resolved or not. What problem would happen if I do "sudo apt autoremove"? Sorry I don't understand.
sudo apt autoremove would delete all this:
This shouldn't be a Problem but to be sure, it is good to have 2 Pairs of Eyes who look at it.
And with that, WINE should be gone from Your System or do You see any WINE Entries somewhere?
Second pair of eyes - that is safe to remove.
Thank you - it looks as if it's gone - a lot got removed.
How do I check that all Wine has gone off the computer?
In terminal, you can run
wine --version
If you see a version listed, it is installed.
If no output, it is not installed.
That's great. I tried it and got:
Command 'wine' not found, but can be installed with:
sudo apt install wine
shoshi@shoshi-ThinkPad:~$
The instructions to install it are the first option Ponce-De-Leon suggested earlier in this thread, so I'm going to do that now.
It all seemed to go in OK until the end, when I got:
Errors were encountered while processing:
/tmp/apt-dpkg-install-pAjXjQ/197-libgtk-3-0t64_3.24.41-4ubuntu1.3_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
Yeah, this has become a current known WINE problem.
Please run:
sudo apt remove libdecor-0-plugin-1-gtk:i386
Then run
sudo apt --fix-broken install
If that does not complete the Wine install, please say so here.

Looking good.
Let's cleanup a bit:
sudo apt clean && sudo apt autoremove

That's looking great! Thank you. Now all I've got to do is learn how to install some Windows programs and hope it works this time.
BTW, I was looking online and came across an excellent site called LinuxSimply which has a great glossary of terms with links to take you to articles on each one - I think this is going to be very helpful for a newbie like me especially if I want to learn how to understand and use the Terminal.
You two guys have been so helpful and I really appreciate the time and trouble you've taken over this as I was at my wits' end! I'd like to keep the thread open in case I encounter any further problems getting up and running with Wine if that's OK?

If you come across a separate issue, it is better to start a new thread where solutions uncovered that help others can be easily found.
Different issues can have different solutions.
