I am connected from an Asus ROG laptop to a brother printer with no problems by USB ..... however if you are looking to connect by WiFi that is a different matter ..... I finally chose the USB because of all the issues I was having with WiFi and CUPS .... been using the USB for 6 months now .....

I agree with @Frog

While I don't use Brother printers, I do have a Canon printer, and it can utilize USB or Ethernet, cause its a commercial model from year 2000. (HP Laserjet 2100) As long as the CUPS driver is installed, you shouldn't have issues.

Just to do a belt and braces job, install Synaptic Package Manager from Software.
After that, launch it (you will be asked for your login password to elevate you to 'root' = administrator) and look for 'printer-driver-all':

Next, if you have downloaded the driver from Brother, install it as per their instructions. Then open a terminal (Ctrl+ Alt+ T) and enter:

sudo system-config-printer

This brings up the 'Add Printer' dialogue window. Click on Add and follow the steps to install your printer. You should be good to go.
