Caesar 3 on Zorin OS/Linux

Quick tutorial to get Caesar III/Caesar 3 running on Zorin OS/Linux,
I made this since I was unable to install Caesar 3 on my dads windows 11 - PC since 16 bit apps are not supported according to a pop-up when we attempted to install it.

I did however manage to copy his installed files from his old Harddrive (however windows 11 would not play it.) So i brought them over to my Zorin Laptop.

Installation

Provided you already have game files you may notice on Zorin OS that the if you simply do the right click and "Open with Install Windows Application"

You will be greeted with music and a black screen

A good way to get this running is a project called Julius

Julius is an open source re-code and multi platform rewrite of Caesar 3 that supports things the original did not such as widescreen, 32 bit desktop support it is also fully compatible with old saves and original files.

Installing Julius

Julius provides a "AppImage" file which you can download here

  1. Downloading the AppImage

Make sure to download the file that ends with "-Linux.AppImage"

  1. Connecting it to your original game files

Once downloaded double click the AppImage file to run it and you will be greeted with a screen asking you to point it to the original game files folder, this folder can be identified by the existence of the "c3.exe" game file and the "c3_mapper.exe" map editor file.

For me this folder was located in a folder called "Impression Games/Caesar 3"

  1. Gameplay

then simply exit and restart the AppImage file and you will be playing the iconic Caesar 3!!! I also recommend creating a link to this app image and placing it on your desktop for ease of acess.

And you are done, good luck with the empire building.
