Can not set refresh rate over 75 Hz in 1920x1080

Hi,
I tried everything i could find online, tried all ai chat bots, etc, no matter what i try, i can't set refresh rate over 75 Hz in 1920x1080.

  • tried NVIDIA proprietary 580, 570, 545, 535
  • tried:
$ cvt 1920 1080 144
# 1920x1080 143.88 Hz (CVT) hsync: 169.35 kHz; pclk: 452.50 MHz
Modeline "1920x1080_144.00"  452.50  1920 2088 2296 2672  1080 1083 1088 1177 -hsync +vsync

$ xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_144.00" 452.50 1920 2088 2296 2672 1080 1083 1088 1177 -hsync +vsync

$ xrandr --addmode DP-0 "1920x1080_144.00"
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
  Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)
  Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode)
  Serial number of failed request: 45
  Current serial number in output stream: 46
  • also tried with 120 Hz, same result

  • tried editing xorg.conf and added Modeline, nothing happened

  • nvidia-settings just won't list anything except 60 and 75 in refresh rate settings for 1920x1080

  • i can however set 144 Hz for 1920x1080 in nouveau and in windows

Are you on XOrg or Wayland? For nvidia card users it is recommended to use XOrg. To switch to XOrg logout and at login click on your username, then a cogwheel at the bottom right appears. There select "Zorin desktop on Xorg". Also disable secure boot and fast boot in your BIOS and also turn off fast startup in Windows while using Linux.

Xrandr only works with XOrg.

in zorin settings / about it shows X11

Do you have a multiple monitor setup or is it the only one?

tried going to bios and set

  • fast boot = from enabled to disabled
  • secure boot = from custom to standard
  • CSM = from enabled to disabled

nothing changed

i have 2 monitors but i also tried unplugging one of them and restarting, no luck.

Proprietary Nvidia drivers will only work properly under Linux if you either disable secure boot or add a MOK. Otherwise they will not load correctly.

Welcome to the Forum!

Did You tried the 550, too?

Monitor Support:

Please confirm your screen is capable of 144HZ, and that the monitor is set to produce it. I have a Dell 4K gaming monitor, that I had to go through the monitors menu's, to enable 144Hz mode.

Cable Support:

Please make sure you are using a cable that supports 1080P 144Hz. Not all cables are the same, so its best to be sure. I am using Display Port for reference as well. Sometimes, its a good idea to try a newer cable.

Nvidia GPU Config:

The best place to set your refresh rate, if you have an Nvidia GPU, is through the Nvidia X Server Settings APP.

If you are still not able to do this, this is the last place I can think of...

Compiz:

Compiz has a small section in the APP, where you can uncheck detect refresh rate, and manually set it to 144Hz.
