Canon MG5250 all in one printer install

I am new to Linux and I cannot get my Canon MG5250 installed on zorin 18.1.
I have tried downloading and installing the drivers from the canon website but the printer/scanner is not seen in the printer setup.

However my other printer in the house a HP Photosmart is seen but I would really like to get my main Canon MG5250 to work.

I hope someone can help.

Hello and welcome,
try to follow this tutorial (Zorin 18.1 is based on ubuntu 24.04)
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1553670/canon-pixma-mg5250-on-ubuntu-24-04

if the canon .deb still doesnt show up in Settings, check cups sees the usb device first:

lpinfo -v

you want a line like usb://Canon/MG5200%20series while its plugged in.

then:
sudo apt install cups printer-driver-gutenprint
sudo systemctl restart cups

open http://localhost:631 → Administration → Add Printer, pick that Canon usb device, and use the Gutenprint MG5200 driver if the official package still wont register.

scanner is separate on these. after print works:
sudo apt install sane-utils
scanimage -L

Hi and welcome.

There is an easier way and better than using Settings | Printers.

You need to download the Linux driver for the printer, and a separate one for the scanner.

https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer/products/printers/pixma/mg-series/pixma-mg5250.html?type=drivers&os=Linux%20(64-bit)

First stop cups autodiscovery of printers, then disable it via the terminal (just type in the word terminal in the menu search bar):

sudo systemctl stop cups-browsed

then

sudo systemctl disable cups-browsed

This will prevent multiple instances of your printer showing up.

Next whilst still in the terminal:

sudo update

then

sudo apt install system-config-printer

Now minimise the terminal window.

Go to the downloaded files and use File Roller to extract the tarball .deb files for both the printer driver and the scanner driver. In the extracted folder are several sub folders. The one you need is named packages. You need to open the Linux folder and choose the x86_64.deb file by right clicking and installing it. Repeat the procedure with the scanner driver tarball.

Go back and maximise the terminal window and enter:

sudo system-config-printer

Then click on 'add printer', if connected directly you should see a USB entry under local, something like MG5200 Series.

If networked, use AppSocket/HP JetDirect option and enter the IP address of the printer.

Then click on the Forward Button and from the list of manufacturers select Canon.

A new window opens listing all Canon printer models available for install. Scroll down until you find the one labeled MG5200 Series. If there is more thane one entry to the right, make sure it is labrleled as the CUPS driver - it shoul also have the word (recommended) at the end of the description, then continue and Apply.
Your printer should now show up.

Next for the Scanner. Launch Document Scanner. It will search for installed devices. By default it always brings back the ID of the printer which is incorrect. You need to click on the drop-down arrow next to the printer name, you need the item beginning with eSCL.

I covered Canon Printer install in the Unofficial Manual for Zorin 18 here:

Welcome to the Forum!

Only to be clear with that. The Driver got installed, right? Or was it really only a ''Try'' and the Drivers didn't got installed?
