Okay, I guess, You wouldn't be fine with going back to Zorin 17? Or You stay on Zorin and use the Nouveau Driver when You fine with the Performance.
I would have another Idea, too but ... might not be optimal (it is a bit unclear if this is still maintained). You could add this PPA and install instead of the 470 Driver the 390 Driver:
In the guide isn't mentioned what to do with the nvidia 470 dkms package. Maybe someone else can tell you, if it needs a special installation. I don't know that.
Hey, i am fine with downgrading. But I probably have the same Problems, wont I ? Meaning: no 470 driver available and no working workaround: missing dependencies in .deb files and no wayland for using the .run file of the nvidia legacy driver.
I will download the 17 Version and try out your tips.
To be sure, I checked the Driver Package in Ubuntu Jammy (the Base of zorin 17) and unfortunately I saw that there it is changes to a transitional Package, too. So, I must say, that these Idea of me will not work.
What You now could do ... in my Opinion the ''best'' Way would be to stay on Zorin 18 and install the 6.8 Kernel. And then follow the Instructions that @Forpli has posted from the ubuntuhandbook Website. Take Option 1. that should be easier to make.
Not optimal, I know. But under these Circumstances, it might be a Way. Sorry for the bad News.
there is a way to install the driver manually by downloading the driver from nvidia the 470 driver in .run form then doing a cd in a ternimal to where it was downloaded then doing sudo sh (filename) but i dont have nvidia vid card on this system. maybe someone(besides me) has done this and can do a walk through showing what to hit during this type of install to manually configure the 470 driver
Yeah, well there is also a patched version on github by joanbm- i hit a wall with both ( .run from nvidia and githib), because both say i have to close the x Server Session and got no idea what to do
i agree the sudo sh filename.run has to be done correctly or it wont work...took me several trys in 17.2 to get it configured if i hadnt changed to an amd vid card i could of took screen shots for what to do to get it woking..I do see a feature branch which is cutting edge 610 driver id need to find the terminal wording to even send you to try it and see what happens. I myself(when i had nvidia) never got those to work properly myself.....hence why i got an amd RX 6600 XT Red Devil 8GB
Then it looks Your System doesn't run in Wayland. You can switch. To do that, go to the Login Screen (simply reboot for that). Click there on Your Profile so that the Password Field appears. When it is appeared, You should see in the bottom right Corner a Gear Icon. Click on it.
Depending if You have zorin installed with Nvidia Drivers or without, You can find slightly different Options. By default, You should find:
Zorin Desktop
Zorin Desktop on Xorg
In this Case choose ''Zorin Desktop''. That is the Wayland Option.
The other Way can be:
Zorin Desktop
Zorin Desktop on Wayland
Here, the actualy Wayland named Option is the Wayland Option. So take this.
Sorry, you are running Zorin 18.1 Lite. There you can't switch to Wayland, although you can select it. The feature is experimental and not yet correctly implemented. Zorin Lite uses only Xorg. With the default xfwm4 window manager you can't use Wayland because it is based on Xorg.
For advanced users, it might work to replace the default xfwm4 of Zorin Lite with labwc or wayfire might, but Wayland will likely still be buggy since it is still in development for xfce.
If you want to try it, it is easier to test on Zorin 17 Core, there you have a Wayland session.
But I still don't understand why Wayland is needed. That surprises me. The old legacy NVIDIA drivers usually run better on Xorg, as does older hardware.
Some users in Linux Mint which is based on Xorg and launchpad recommended the 470 driver installation by adding a ppa:
I read that the 470 driver will be repacked in September, maybe it will be easier then? I'm not sure if in Ubuntu or LM.
Some users in the LM thread wrote, that the server package has solved their problems.
It's hard to say right now whether things will work, just like the workaround from ubuntuhandbook that was written in July, no longer seems to work.
Edit: Hm...I think, the server package no longer works. I read in the description of the package that it is a transitional package now, and the post where I had found it, was from June.
Ah, You on Zorin Lite. Sorry, my Mistake. There You don't have a Wayland Session. xfce (the Base of the Zorin Lite Desktop) works at the Moment on a Wayland Session. So, this can take a While until this will come - and until then Zorin doesn't have the Lite Desktop anymore.
The Description above was for Core. Again: Sorry, my Mistake.
It would be helpful if you used the markup strikeout feature to x out mistakes in your post. Just type tilde tilde ~~ characters before and after text to be struck out.
Ok, this makes sense. Well I am quite inexperienced and exited out of the X server, just to find that the OS is then always booting to a terminal-like field. Which presented a new problem I was unhappy to deal with. Now I deletedall installations, installed Lubuntu and followed guides for reclocking the nouveau driver.
I probably give up on the proprietary and never by Nvidia again
