Can't print after suspend/sleep

Bit of an odd issue. From a cold boot or a reboot, Zorin detects the network printer, and all apps can print just fine. But if I let the computer go to sleep/suspend, everything breaks.

Apps either don't list the printer anymore, or print jobs get hung indefinitely. From the Zorin control panel, the printer doesn't show up, but dig deeper to the Gnome panel, and it's listed, but attempting to print a test page fails.

Once again, it works fine after a reboot or cold boot. The printer is a Brother MFC-L2750 if that makes any difference.

Just curious if anyone has had a similar issue. Also, if anyone can suggest a sudo command or script to reinitialize the print system without rebooting the entire computer, that might be helpful.

Welcome to the forum!

Just out of curiosity, is your printer connected via USB, Network connection via Ethernet or Wifi? I know you state network printer, but that could be either Ethernet or Wifi. There's also some insane people (me) who use a usb on the router to use my printer on the network.

The printer is connected to the network with ethernet, with a static IP. The computer is connected by wifi.

I'll also add that I just found out Brother lists a linux driver in a .deb package, but it's from 2017 and I've had bad experiences installing old deb packages.

Okay, so I went ahead and installed the drivers from the .deb package and... It works? I'll need to test more obviously, but at the very least Firefox and LibreOffice were both able to list the printer after a suspend, which they couldn't do before.

Before installing the .deb I had been using the autodetected 'driverless' version. And again, it did work, but only from a cold boot.

Anyway... Fixed? I guess? And I still credit the forums for helping, because it was a related post that even told me that Brother had official (if old) linux drivers. So thanks.

Some packages, if old, work just fine because nothing has changed much in five years. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of thing.

Some old packages will not work, because other development projects have changed other things; causing the package to need updating.

So, really, guessing based on age is less helpful than gauging by release cycle necessity.

Found this using Brave A.I. Search engine:

"Brother Printer Won't Wake Up

Users experiencing issues with Brother printers not waking up from sleep mode after Ubuntu 22.04 resumes from sleep can try setting the sleep timer to 0 to prevent the printer from entering deep sleep. This solution was reported to work for a Brother MFC-25740DW, allowing the printer to wake up and function immediately without needing to be manually powered on.

Disabling deep sleep mode might not resolve the issue entirely, as some users have noted that even after disabling it, the printer still goes into a state where it cannot be accessed over the network. Additionally, ensuring the printer is properly configured in Ubuntu and checking network connectivity can help troubleshoot the problem."

I also spotted a result which related to a Windows user who could not wake Brother printer from deep sleep state!

Glad to hear you so far have it working! If any other problems come up, don't hesitate to ask.
