To change the default icon of a file or folder right-click it, click Properties, click the icon that you see there (yeah, that's a button, not a simple icon preview box 
) and choose the icon you want to apply. You can even apply a picture as icon. To restore the default one just open again its properties, click the icon and then Restore.
