Choppy HDMI Audio using on-demand mode on NVIDIA GPU

Hi, novice linux user - hoping to find more information about something i ran into

For the longest time, I've been trying to deal with choppy, crackling audio issues via HDMI from my laptop, as I plug it into my TV. Checked alsamixer, soundcard is recognized as HDA Intel HDMI. pavucontrol recognized the output as well.
Tried random fixes throughout the web, i.e. editing pipewire.conf files, moving it to '/etc/pipewire'. Other 5-10 year old forum posts involved fixes for pulseaudio, to my understanding Zorin uses pipewire instead. All to no avail, and, in retrospect, I should've slowed down before I broke something.

Briefly read that issue might be with NVIDIA. Out of sake of tinkering, went on PRIME Profiles, switched to an performance mode NVIDIA GPU through Nvidia X Server settings, previously being on NVIDIA on-demand mode. (Intel graphics card is greyed out and inaccessible however (?) ). HDMI audio works miles better and just hitches every 10-ish minutes. OK, fine, good enough for me.

But:

I'm concerned if running off of a dedicated GPU is safe long-term... that can't be good. My battery is weak as it is LOL.

My question is - does anyone else have any idea as to what caused this issue to begin with, is it driver issue with NVIDIA and I'd have to switch to an older version (as i run an older-gen GTX980M), or is there something else happening? Also why am I not able to run on power-saving mode on Nvidia X Settings?

Welcome to the Forum!

  • Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled?
  • If Windows is installed: Is Fast Start-Up in Windows disabled?
  • What Kernel do You run at the Moment? You can check that with the Terminal Command uname -r
  • What Options on the Output and Configuration Tab do You have in pavucontrol?

Was it greyed out in the on-demand Mode?

on-demand keeps the 980m mostly powered down so hdmi audio that rides the nvidia path gets choppy. performance mode leaves the dgpu awake which is why the crackling mostly went away. using that for tv nights is fine, just more heat and battery drain. wont kill the card.

power saving being greyed out is pretty normal on older maxwell + prime once nvidia is driving the display. for unplugged day use switch back to on-demand. for tv leave performance on. the leftover hitch every ~10 min is probably pipewire clocking, you can bump default.clock.quantum a bit under pipewire.conf.d if it still bugs you.

  • Secure boot/fast boot - disabled.
  • Windows is not installed.
  • Kernel: 7.0.0-31-generic
  • Output Devices : JamesDSP Sink; HDMI / DisplayPort (plugged in), Built-In Audio Pro; Built-In Audio Pro 1
  • Configuration : Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output; Pro Audio
  • Intel is greyed out both after selecting on-demand and performance, after reboots.

That's insightful. I'm assuming this is just something I have to put up with, having older NVIDIA hardware. Besides the countless issues people have had with their drivers on linux lol. At least now I know what's up. Thank you.
