Clean install black screen on boot (Nvidia)

Hello hello,

I’ve just done a clean install (the Nvidia option) on my machine (Ryzen 7800X3D and RTX4080) and I have made sure that secure boot has been disabled before I did the install.

Unfortunately I immediately get a black screen while booting followed by signal loss. I assume that this has something to do with the driver that’s being used for the display, but I don’t know what I can do from this point because I cannot do anything because I cannot see anything.

Should I do something in the live environment?

Hoping someone can help me out here.

Cheers

Reboot and then choose "advanced options" and then safe graphics.

You can choose an other driver.
Before installing a new one, remove the current nvidia driver:
sudo apt remove --purge '^nvidia-.*'

Then also switch to XOrg:

  1. Log out of your user account or restart your computer.
  2. At the login screen, please select your username.
  3. Click on the gear icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen to open the desktop environment menu.
  4. Select the “Zorin Desktop on Xorg” option, not “Zorin Desktop” or “Zorin Desktop on Wayland”.
  5. Afterward, log in normally again.

Turn off fast boot in your BIOS.

Unfortunately I get a fully black screen after my PC's boot logo when I can press keys for getting into bios or choose a boot override. So I don't think I have a chance to select the advanced options.

If I'm able to select it I'll report back, I'll give it a couple of tries to see if I can make it appear!

You should not get a black screen until the drivers are loaded - so accessing the Grub Menu and the Advanced Options should be fine...

If you are getting a black screen at the motherboard splash screen, that means you need to check a physical fault like the Video Cable - (some are one directional and need to be turned around) or a not seated video card.

The motherboard splashscreen shows just fine, I am able to go into my bios and select a boot device as well. Immediately after that though is when the screen turns black.

ETA: my machine was working perfectly fine before the Zorin OS installation btw, so I don't think it's a hardware issue in that sense.
