I'm a noobie to Linux and Zorin. I've set up vnc on Windows, but can't understand the limited references that I can find. There is a link to installing vnc on Ubuntu, but a lot is assumed, and then there is no gnome interface. I'm guessing it's related to the startup file?
I've succeeded in installing tightvnc server, but still have to figure out how to get it to start automatically. I can connect via vnc, but end up with a gray screen, so I think I need some kind of interface. Maybe?
There doesn't seem to be any comprehensive Zorin (with gnome) installation guide that I can find. ANY help is most appreciated!
So by default there's an option to share remotely your desktop, either via RDP or VNC. If you go to the Settings app -> Sharing, you can enable sharing there and remote desktop:
These options should allow you to share your desktop on linux to windows via whatever option you desire. Unless you're asking for the other way around, where you want to view your windows desktop on linux? In that case, there are are options like Remmina on linux to allow those connections easily.
...but I still cannot connect from tightvnc viewer. I've tried 2 ways, from Ripple and from a command line. Neither works with "vnc://spare-pc.local" that I see in the Sharing area. Both seem to want IP addresses. Although I know the IP, no connection is forthcoming.
When I ran vncserver, I did get a connection, but a grey screen instead of a desktop. So I'm stuck, twice.
I too shall be back after the 26th. One thing I would check is if you have the firewall enabled . If it is, it may be blocking the connection to be used. Could test easily by turning off and then trying the connection.
Happy holidays, and if I have time in the next little while I'll try this connection as well and see what I see.
I found the firewall and it was not enabled. To check it out, I set a rule to accept incoming vnc and to log. Then I tried to connect. Error message from vncviewer app: "Connection has been gracefully closed" The command line just timed out.
So testing with both my desktop and laptop, the default connection setting for VNC will ask for permission in the form of this popup:
If you don't click allow, it will say it refused the connection.
You have to click there and allow the connection. You do have the option to allow connections via a password instead, such as the following:
If you select a password, you can enter the password that you want under the Authentication portion of the window and that would allow you to connect without needing to click the popup.
If you select to use a password, and have the password saved in your connections on the computer you are using to connect to Zorin, then that should solve the problem of not having to give permission every time you connect.
I'm using Remote Ripple for a quick vnc connection. I saved the password, but Zorin is still requesting permission. I tried stopping and restarting sharing, but it is still asking.
Also, do I have to restart the sharing whenever I reboot Zorin or is it persistent?
It should be persistent. And for me when I deselect ask permission and check the password option, I do not need to be at the computer for confirmation. Perhaps there's something else going on here
YES! I didn't see that option inside "Enable Legacy VNC protocol." I do see you had it in a screen shot, but I missed where that choice was located. I see it now.
Thank you so much for your kind help to straighten this out. I'm cleared to move forward in my gradual migration to Zorin.
