I guess I messed something up...the bar at the top of windows with the close/Minimize/Maximize buttons is missing from SOME applications, but not others. FIrefox it shows, VLC and Thunar is is there, and works as intended, but invisible. See screen capture. Any idea what setting I messed with that I shouldn't have?
Welcome to the Forum!
For me it looks like that on VLC the complete Title Bar is missing. Did You changed something in the Settings?
And how are the affected Programs installed? As Flatpak or .deb Package?
I did change settings, but they are so spread out into different places and not always obvious I don't remember which ones I changed. And yes, the whole title bar is invisible. I install everything from the Software program in the Start menu. Whatever the default is there, is what I did. VLC was Flatpak.
I tried uninstall/reinstall and made no difference.
Try delete; ~/.config/vlc
Aren't the configuration files saved at another place when vlc is installed as flatpak, maybe at
~/.var/app/org.videolan.VLC?
Okay, I would suggest to try it with uninstalling the Flatpak Version of VLC and taking the APT/.deb Version.
No, none of that worked. And it's not just a VLC issue - thunar and other random apps are affected. Even FIrefox, if there is a popup window, pops up with an invisible titlebar and buttons.
Really, the only things adjust on a new set up, is the theme and looks stuff. And that seems to be where the issue is.
Did you made a complete reinstallation or did you keep your home directory?
Did you test it with the original Zorin theme? Do you have made changes at gtk .css files or the themes files?
I did look around and change 'snap to' settings or anything that I thought might affect that. I am trying to avoid reinstalling, as it takes me forever to get the system set up just perfect. I never changed a theme - just changed the colors. Never touched actual files.
Just out of curiosity do you have another desktop environment installed? Such as XFCE or some other one, on top of what Zorin comes with?
Ah, sorry, I misunderstood you because of my automatic German translator. The google translator translated your sentence into "I tried to uninstall/reinstall the system and made no difference." and you meant vlc.
I have used a bunch of different linuxes and Zorin is by far the best, most simple one I have ever found. I installed a few apps like Abiword and VLC but otherwise I like everything stock.
The only reason I ask is because the couple of icons in your taskbar in your screenshot (the volume and battery) icons look different than I think they should for the stock Zorin / Gnome look. If you click them what comes up?
Ah, you caught me...I have an issue with weird names and icons so I changed the icons and in a couple cases the name that shows in the task bar to be something I could associate with the apps purpose ie thunar now has a couple file folders on the icon and the names is 'FIles' instead of Thunar...
But no, I am quite happy with a stock Zorin install with a few minor 'features' and visual changes. Thrilled actually...I have been trying to get off Windows for 15 years.
Ok sorry, I should clarify. Are you using Zorin Lite or Zorin Core? I assume Zorin Lite, but my brain is quite difficult to get going some days to be honest.
Core. Not sure what Lite is. On a Surface Go 2 laptop.
Would you please adapt your forum's profile? There is shown the lite version. The look of your taskbar is also more like xfce, the desktop environment of Zorin lite - are you sure? You wrote also about Thunar, that is the default file manager of Zorin Lite. In Zorin core the file manager is Nautilus. Have you changed it and installed Thunar?
Are you on Zorin 17 core or 18 core?
Have you also installed any themes as well? These might change the look of windows, though it's possible it doesn't affect all of them. And does the issue persist if you select different layouts in Zorin Appearance → Layouts?
Another thing that you can try as a test is temporarily disabling any configurations made, following @Storm's advice. Launch Thunar and press Ctrl+H to toggle the view of hidden files, and locate a folder called ~./config. Right-click on it, and rename it to something else e.g. .config.bak
Then, log out and log back in, and see if things are back to normal.
17.3 lite. I am not sure how I got that - when I go to the DL page I only see Core, Ed, and Pro. Sorry for the error.
As I have said, this happens in various apps, but not in FIrefox. In FIrefox, when I click a link that opens a pop up, THEN it has the invisible titlebar. When there are tabs, the titlebar appears.
Other apps like Pinta, SMplayer, etc are missing titlebar. Not just THunar and VLC.
